What About A Website Builder?

I’ve had many people asking what about a website builder to create an online presence instead of using traditional methods of programming and open source software packages to create their websites.

what about a website builderTo understand what a website builder is, we’ll take a deeper look at what a website is all about. For most people, sites have become as familiar a term as knowing what a vehicle is these days.

There was a time when the name website meant nothing just as in earlier history there were no cars. With the fast pace of today’s world just about everybody knows about websites just as he or she know about cars.

Web sites have been and still are comprised of information and different media that are being used in social media, non-commercial and commercial applications.

In the past, websites were totally built upon code from such products as Microsoft Frontpage, Adobe Dreamweaver, and Flash which were just some of what the mainstream programmes used. Most people did not create websites as they did not know how to code unless they were ready to learn. There was also a lot fewer sites around being developed compared to today.

Definition for Website Builder

Website builders are the ability to have web pages constructed without the use of code commands and sequences manually performed or use of databases or template appliances in the creation of websites.

Website builders come in two forms, online and offline.

The Online Website Builder- is part of a CM, which is known as a Content Management System that collects, manages and administers blocks of published information through the Internet or another medium. Website hosting companies offer end users as a website construction tool.

An Offline Website Builder- is a software package capable of producing web pages to create an entire website with the ability to upload to an online hosting company via an FTP protocol for example.

Online Compared to Offline

Due to higher average Internet speeds with greater open source development into software created in modules and packets hosting companies can offer simple website builds online. The days have arrived where anyone can now get a site up and running without web design knowledge.

  • You require no web development coding or experience to create a website.
  • Usually, can sign up for free access to a website builder company.
  • Hosting and website builder platforms are controlled by the same company.
  • Ability to create immediately and start developing content in less than a minute.
  • With an Internet connection, you can operate anywhere.
  • No requirements for software or hardware setups to get started.

For offline you’ll usually need to configure equipment to have hardware and software setup to create websites. Programming with a code will be a requirement which means the majority of people will lack the knowledge to choose this route. Most commercial programmers and companies offering web building services rule this roost and prices will usually reflect this fact.

Greater ability to incorporate more website functions and features in this method.

  •  You are less dependent on individual hosting companies, with the capacity to easily move to another one.
  • The capability to work offline then changes are uploaded later by FTP.
  • Upload and download are available by FTP.
  • Software packages by various companies.

As the Internet has expanded and continued to move forward, many more people have the opportunity to get involved with the Web. This interest has led to an entirely new way of thinking. With the thousands of new people regularly showing up online, companies have opened their doors to a whole new world of communications, monetizing, the way they monetize and allowing others to get in on the action.

To do this the companies needed to simplify the process of creating websites, the birth of Website Builder Software was introduced. These software programs keep evolving to meet the requirements necessary for others to be able to easily, apply a simple drag and drop procedure. Nowadays, most people have come accustom to drag and drop from using computers and other such devices. The concept of drag and drop makes it much easier for people to get involved with creating their websites.

The companies that offer this service may have free options, limitations, and scalable paid packages. The most predominant system for creating websites that are now ruling the majority of the world’s Internet are websites built from an open source software know worldwide as WordPress. Great post,
I am currently using WordPress and am finding it quite easy to get the hang of. Have you got any experience with any other platforms? And if you have any programs that can run in conjunction with WordPress and help create a better Website? Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Julian

    Hi Julian,

I use to use other platforms before using WordPress. The main ones I use to use in the past were Adobe Dreamweaver and Flash.

Nowadays most people use a website builder software package or the main one now is WordPress. I chose to use WordPress as it allows for better flexibility over the website builders offered by others.

Where WordPress is open source, there are plenty of themes you can use and most importantly the availability of all the different plugins you can add to the particular theme you may be using.

The programs that I use in conjunction with wordPress for developing my site are two key graphic design programs. I use Corel Draw and Photoshop 6 to create all my banners, headers and all photos and images I work on for my websites.

There’s other editing software available to choose from, but these are the two I use.

For the SEO segment of my websites I use Jaaxy and some of the free tools offered by Google and other companies for checking out page rank.

excellent site and has helped me a lot. I have been considering building a website for a while now but was afraid to as I did know really know where to start and thought it was a job for professionals and therefore cost me a lot of money.

I am glad I found this site as it has opened my eyes to the possibilities.

Things have changed a lot through the years, David. With all the new updates with the internet companies have been making it easier all the time to get involved with having an online business.

As easy as things are getting in the way of creating a website you do still need to apply a reasonable amount of time working with it for updates and content and get involved with doing SEO and marketing to make your business truly successful.

That’s why there are a few good websites like the one I recommend to help us achieve our goals.

April 25, 2016 at 10:06 pm

I learned a lot from your site. I’m definitely glad that I don’t have to do any coding because I am clueless in that department. I use wordpress and I don’t know everything about it yet, but I continue to learn more each day. Thank you for this information. It makes it clear which route we should go when wanting to create our own website. I definitely plan on visiting your site again to learn more.

    April 26, 2016 at 1:37 am

You’ll find as time passes there will always be improvements on making website builders easier but there will always be things to learn. If not with the websites themselves there will always be the way the websites need to incorporate SEO to perform properly.

The website builders of today are light years ahead of how I use to have to code my websites to now it can all be done without coding. Features and functions will continue to change so we need to learn to stay with them.

It’s all part of running an online business. No matter what we do to make money we need to know things so the Internet is no different.

Isn’t it amazing how easy it is to build websites nowadays with website builders? No more need to learn coding and spend time, fixing all those coding errors. Even using the software like Dreamweaver was hard for me. The Website Builder you have described seems very easy to use. I also use a website builder, but it can be used only online.

    May 19, 2016 at 11:33 pm

Nowadays most people do tend to use the online website builders which work great and are all you really need for most people. With the ease and simplicity of using website builders over the older traditional software for creating sites, most people can now create their own without to many problems.

June 1, 2016 at 10:14 pm

I currently use website builders and have two of my own websites and have helped family members build websites for their business endeavors. I don’t think people realize how easy website development can be nowadays. I think most people still assume you have to know code. I use wordpress myself.

    June 2, 2016 at 10:08 am

It is true that building websites has become easier over the years and I would say that trend shall continue. Using WordPress gives you more flexibility as a website builder over a lot of the over sites that offer a website builders.

With WordPress, you still can get into coding but it is not required for anyone to have to code it just gives you the option that you still can code within WordPress.

Hello Travis!

Good article! I am newbie in this internet but I was able to create a website with word press. Its amazing how simple it is do it actually!
I did not know it could be done offline though!
is there any specific website builder that you would advise, for offline or online website build?

Thanks for sharing such useful information!

    June 23, 2016 at 10:30 am

With the technology today and the speed of the Internet, I no longer build websites offline. When I did, I used programs like Dreamweaver and Flash mostly that are not website builders and required coding for everything. There are newer versions of offline website builders, but I have not used them personally.

I now use an online website builder for WordPress as well through Wealthy Affiliates platform. The reason I chose them over other website builders such as Wix, Weebly, Squarespace just to list a couple is I wanted unlimited flexability that the main stream website builders do not offer.

I also wanted the ongoing training that just doesn’t deal with the website builder itself which is great but all the necessary training that helps to make your site successful. You see the other website builders deal with the site itself and only touches a small bit on SEO. Wealthy Affiliate is more than just building a site but the whole website package to have a successful business online.

When I first got into the online world I thought that the best option would be to build my own site from scratch. The reason that I thought this is because then I would able to fully customize it to be however I wanted it to be.

But I am realizing now that that would just be me reinventing the wheel and that there is no use for it when there are highly customizeable website building services out there that will do it for me.

Great post!

    July 9, 2016 at 10:50 am

In Days past Alec, we had no choice unless we wanted to pay big money to some designers on how are websites would look, or you would need to learn how to code and build your site. Nowadays there are lots of website builders that will do all the back end stuff for you.

The first biggest choice now is which provider do you go with that has the functions and features in their website builder that will allow you to do what you require for your site.

Each of these providers will give you training on how to use their platform if they are a unique and not open source. WordPress is open source, so there are sites dedicated to helping you learn anything required for using it in every way possible.

The providers will host and give you some level of security or total security. They usually also offer domain name purchases or are affiliated with companies that do.

So most providers will take care of the first stages, it’s where you go from there to complete the operations of your site for SEO and ranking. This is where providers like Wealthy Affiliate get started to show you what it takes to have a website. Wealthy Affiliate understands that having a website builder to give you a site with hosting is only the beginning, and they have a wealth of knowledge to get you the rest of the way.

Lot’s of info.
I’m currently using WordPress, and I found it very easy to operate and there is a lot of Q&A on the internet if you encounter a problem.
Do you think it’s good for “Bloggers any Niche” or should I use a different website builder?
I hope not because I already start to work wit it 🙂

    August 7, 2016 at 11:57 am

As far as I’m concerned, using WordPress is the better choice. With all the other website builders they can offer an excellent package and some of them can handle most situations anyone may require them to deal withfor creating a site. Using WordPress gives you more flexibility to be able to handle anything you need to deal with when building a site. Also, the website builder that uses WordPress that operates with no limitations does allow you to get into coding if you want to. You’re not required to code, but you can learn and use it if you choose to.

You already decided to use what I would classify as the best possible platform for website creation so I would stick with it. After all, It is what I promote for others to use.

August 6, 2016 at 1:50 pm

I did have a thought while I was reading your post. Do you think that online website builders will take over from people who program? It seems to me that this is the case.

The benefits to a person from a non-programming background that this is the way to go. As it is so easy I expect more people to create a website. You see adverts on TV all the time. So it is definitely attractive for individuals as well as startup companies.

    August 7, 2016 at 12:05 pm

You will see more people convert to using website builders as time passes. You’ll also see more people start to create and manage their sites more as well just like the trends have already been showing over the last few years.

As far as the programming part goes there will always be programmers because somebody has to write the original code to make all these website builders function the way they do so others can bypass the coding issues.

Think of the programmers as the manufacture to create the software for others to operate and technicians to fix the glitches when the code has issues. Like a car company. You do not need to know how to build or fix your car, all you need to know is how to operate your vehicle.

September 27, 2016 at 2:33 pm

What is the benefit of using WordPress and why is it so famous?
Is it better than other free blogging platforms?
I have been struggling to make my own blog but I have no idea how to get started and all this while I have been holding back just because I think having a website is really tedious job.

    September 28, 2016 at 2:14 pm

Hi Shrey, and I’ll see about answering your questions the best I can.

The benefits of using WordPress is the amount of flexibility it will offer anyone who chooses to use the platform.

With regular software or even other blogging platforms they will have programmers that create their software. The number of developers will be dictated by how much they want to spend for the development and maintenance for updates and fixing any issues. The more they employ, the higher the costs so they will rely on a certain team size to design, create and develop their platform for users.

WordPress is an open source platform for anyone to design, build and develop. This means, instead of having a small group of people on a payroll you now have tens of thousands if not more improving on what WordPress can do as a platform with all the extra plugins, etc.

So WordPress has taken over the majority of sites being created today with its platform because you can do more with it than the other website builders.

Now as far as the free platforms goes that is partly up to the providers how much freedom they allow with what they will give you for free. Most providers make their money from hosting so they will limit their website builders for what you receive for free, in the hope of you purchasing one of their paid packages.

Wealthy Affiliate offers much more than just simple hosting, so they give you more for free, and because they use WordPress as their website builder, you get an excellent free package.

As far as getting your site to perform for you, you will need to learn all about SEO and marketing for your site to earn an income. Some places specialize in parts of SEO and marketing or all of it. You can take extra time trying to find free sources and see what works or doesn’t work or pay for a program.

To have a provider and all the training required for being successful with understanding SEO and marketing and everything else that comes with running an online business, then the best place I have found for the price, training and support is Wealthy Affiliate.

I’m sure you can find others, but you’ll probably be dealing with a few different companies for sure and paying much more money trying to get your online business operational. I’d recommend and especially to anyone new to the Internet to save time, money and aggravation, by joining Wealthy Affiliate for free and start learning how it’s done.

Thank god for website builders! Easy to use and so powerful. No more coding or programming skills needed unless you want to take your website a step further thru modification.

I am personally using WordPress and I love it. Have you tried other CMSs like Drupal or Joomla? I heard they’re not as user-friendly but maybe they’re more powerful?

    October 20, 2016 at 10:47 am

I’m not familiar with those two types of website builders. I’ll have to take a look at them to see just what they are all about and what the providers services are like with them so I can pass the information onto others. Even though I may not use their services, there may be others that want to know about them or use them.

I’ll research them and do up some articles to let others know about them to make a better decision about which services they would like to use.

Hi Travis,
Offline website building is news to me! WordPress has changed the game. I used to struggle with Dreamweaver and Frontpage for older sites. Since WordPress, it takes minutes to create and publish a site.

Not sure if WordPress and FTP can work together? If you have any suggestions, let me know.

    January 20, 2017 at 12:11 pm

The software for offline website builders is available but I must say after using software packages like you mentioned and uploading with an FTP program I decided not to use any offline website builder software. Instead with all the great online website builders that the providers supply for people to use when on their platform for hosting, it is better to use their software and have less down time if you run into trouble with your site.

Since I’ve been with Wealthy Affiliate, I have had no down time and if there are any issues you can get them taken care of very quickly as support always makes sure their system and software builder are always working great. When you consider how fast the Internet connections are these days, working online is the way to go.
