What Is A Domain Name And Hosting?

what is a domain name and hosting

Step #8 of Ten

what about starting an online business intro

You want to know what a domain name and hosting is! This article will address that question so there will be no doubt to what they are and most importantly one of the best places to get yours. From the previous step, you understand the importance of having a website as it is the platform from where you’ll display your content to the world. For you to do that, you’ll require a domain name and a hosting package. Without either of these two, the website does not exist on the Web.

The best way we’ll take a look at these two is to break them up in our discussion for the moment:

  • What is a Domain Name?
  • What is Hosting?

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the Internets way of knowing who and where you are. With hundreds of million of websites floating around in cyberspace, the only way people surfing the Web can find you is by having a unique identification. The Internet has come up with a method that allows the combination of letters, numbers, and words to be put together as a one time string as a unique identifier in front of an extension.

what is a domain nameIn the beginning, the extension was .com and due to the massive traffic turnover of all the sites being developed, others had to be incorporated such as .net, .org then the countries also came into play with .us for the United States, .ca for Canada, or .co for Colombia.

There are so many sites being developed that there are generic extensions like .club, .website, .photography, .accountant, .acountants or .actor and the list goes on.

Depending on what you are doing on the Internet determines whether you purchase a top level domain name like .com, .net, .org or a one of the lesser extension choices.

Now every time you have a different extension, you can have the same name in front. An example is for one of my businesses TD Remodeling would be tdremodeling.com and tdremodeling.ca. Both of these domain names could be a separate company owned by two different entities but in this case, they both belong to me.

So every domain name that is on the Web is a one of a kind address for a company, organization or individual doing something on the Internet.

Now the same way we all have an address for mail, not everybody lives in a detached home. Some people live in condos and apartment buildings. The Internet is addressing this same scenario by having what is called a sub-domain name. You can take any domain name and by adding another unique identifier in front of the original domain name and add a period create as many new addresses as required.

You see this is how the providers offer you a free website by allowing you to add on a unique identifier for the Internets search engines to find you. So whether they need a hundred, thousand or more, just keep adding them on according to availability.

What is Hosting?

The second part of what we’ll take a look at is what is hosting?

what is hostingKnown to many as Webhosting, Web Hosting, and Website hosting is classified as when a business will have one or more websites where they house them by maintaining all related files and the services that go with it. Most providers offer connections on a T-carrier system for fast connections vital for Internet users. The cost of these connections is expensive on one’s own but through a provider the many split the costs.

When it comes to free hosting, some companies refer to it as virtual hosting where they will supply you with a sub-domain and storage space for your website. Either term of hosting or virtual hosting are synonyms with one another. There is also what is known as a virtual server where it will appear an individual or company will have their very own server to control their website.

With colocation, you’ll have larger companies purchase their own servers to have them placed on the providers site to give them the fast connections they require for the Internet. These dedicated servers work well for the high traffic companies requiring dedicated hosting.

For the majority of us, we do not need to worry about setting up a server to host our websites but instead, look into having a package and options that come with the best plan that will give us the hosting we require. That’s another advantage of being able to start with a free hosting package as it allows you to see or at least figure out what you need. This is a really good post. some people just starting out find everything confusing and difficult to understand. They are told to get a domain name and their first thought is ‘hey what?’ and then panic sets in. This clear and simple explanation will help those people a lot. I was one of them and I wish I had found your post before I started. It would have made my struggle time so much shorter.

    April 24, 2016 at 11:08 am

Hi Margaret, and what you say is so true. There are thousands of new people getting involved with wanting an online business these days, and odds are it’s probably not going to slow down anytime soon.

After learning and working my other websites many visitors would be asking for information and help so that is one of the reasons for starting this site. I decided to create a simple site for new comers and offer the opportunity to be successful online.

Anyone can learn and anyone with no to advanced skills will find a great opportunity here if they want it.

With countless caveats and hosting companies out there, it’s easy to be overwhelmed and make a pretty stupid mistake that could ultimately cripple your online business ( who want’s to be stuck with a $12 domain name for a year they will never use – or can’t sell). Hopefully this article will put them on the right track – great read!

    May 3, 2016 at 9:25 pm

Hi Chris, and with this site and others like it, people will be able to learn what they need to know to get an online presence without making lots of costly mistakes for time and money.

Having an online business is not hard, it just requires good time management and any money that you do spend, to make sure you apply it to what matters most.

May 24, 2016 at 12:44 pm

Thanks for explaining this concept. I was so confused when I started out – what was a domain name, what’s hosting? I think it was so confusing because you often find domain sellers offering hosting as well. And if you are going with free hosting you get a free (subdomain) domain name…

    May 24, 2016 at 7:52 pm

Things have changed a lot over the years and more companies are now getting involved with offering more complete packages that new people to the Internet have no knowledge of how things where in the past.

Some things have been made easier while others have become more complicated. This website will see about helping out with some of the confusion to make things easier as much as possible.

I love your short article explaining us the meanings of a domain name and hosting. Awesome job, newbies need to understand this before starting their business because it’s a critical part of any online business. By the way when picking up a domain name you better choose something related and brandable so that people would like it !

    June 7, 2016 at 9:30 pm

It certainly helps to pick a name that people will like and that will also help to make it easier to brand your name. Some people believe the web is full of secrets but in reality there are just protocalls to follow and knowledge to build an online business.

You could compare to driving a car. To drive a car is not magic and there are no big secrets to driving a car. There is just a learning curve at the beginning to understand how a car operates and works. Once you learn to drive a car, you are able to drive different makes and models. If you want to drive an 18-wheeler then you need to learn some extra stuff like dealing with airbrakes or stick shift.

Dealing with the Internet to run an online business is no different that you need to learn how it’s done and works then your good to go.

June 7, 2016 at 12:51 pm

Hello there! Your article is very clear, informational and helpful. I like that you use simple words to describe what is a domain name and what is web hosting, because most people don’t know, get confused and avoid building a website. I was like that in the beginning. I found all those things very difficult and technical and I thought that building a website is too hard. Thank you for your post, it is really helpful, especially for new learners!

    June 7, 2016 at 11:54 pm

I created this site for anyone to get whatever information that may be helpful for them for their online presence and made the decision to simplify the articles for the majority of my visitors that are new to the Internet looking how and where to start.

I do put information that is benificial to just about anyone in some of the articles just to make sure I’m not leaving anybody out. After all we are all here to build successful businesses and help those we can.

June 29, 2016 at 10:34 pm

Thanks for the explanation on domain name and hosting. I actually recently put a website up and am trying to find out about SEO. There is so much most spammy garbage out there, it’s a headache trying to sort through what’s legit and what’s a scam. Do you know any reliable sources?

    June 30, 2016 at 10:30 am

At present, I have been able to learn everything I need to know from Wealthy Affiliate and the community. Unlike other providers, WA is an entire system that teaches you everything you need to know about building a successful website.

Other providers teach you about their website builders and how to create your site and maybe a little bit more after that. Wealthy Affiliate uses its website builder as simply one small step out of many to get you started then they teach you all the critical information that makes your site work for you.

Where WA has no upsells, I learn all about SEO from the community as well without all the scams of people pushing useless products that don’t work just to make a buck. Instead, we learn about what works!

I’ll have to check into if there are any free resources around for helping out those with different providers. It’s something I have not thought about much as Wealthy Affiliate is like a University online always updating to offer training for what you need to be successful.

July 17, 2016 at 6:15 pm

Thank you for the simple explanations. It just reminded me how much I have learned about online world during one year. Now I was thinking like, “many people probably know this already” but then I remembered that I didn’t know these things 1 year before, lol! It’s nice that you provide explanations for the people so they can also learn all this online words.

    July 18, 2016 at 10:58 am

Exactly, depending on somebodies level of understanding, that determines what they know or may not know. A lot of visitors looking to find out what is a website builder are relatively new to having an online presence and require some extra information at times.

Also, even the ones that have been around, some are still looking for the proper place to get started as there are so many companies or individuals that just offer useless information or opportunities that most find out to be scams.

Learning about getting the right type of domain name and hosting can save a lot of time and money.

Thank you for this informative post.
This is certainly useful information for an individual who wants to start an online business.
Many people get confused between the domain name and hosting and I’m glad someone put this information out there.
Is it necessary to place keywords in the domain name?

    July 18, 2016 at 11:10 am

You do not need to keywords in the domain name. If you choose to create a domain name that has no keywords, you will find your website will probably rank on the first page extremely fast. The thing is once it is on the first page it makes no real difference as nobody is looking for your site. This method requires you to brand your name so that people will start to enter your name because they already know about it into their browsers.

By choosing a keyword phrase for your name, you will already have traffic for it as soon as you rank front page. As more people also become aware of your name the same as branding, even more, traffic will happen. The thing to remember about using an existing keyword phrase is to take into account how much competition there is for the phrase. It will take longer to rank as there is more competition for certain keywords so choose one that has as much traffic as possible with least amount of competition.

Food for thought and it comes down to how you want to tackle the issue of generating traffic.

Hey Travis,

Thanks for this wonderful breakdown and explenation on What Is A Domain Name And Hosting.

I always looked at a domain name as a piece of real estate online that you can fill with interesting and exciting information, that will help the readers seeking some particular bit of information.

I really appreciate at the bottom how you link us back to all the other steps, your site offers a wealth of helpful information thanks so much.

Do you think it is OK for commercial websites to use .org extensions to trick folks into thinking they are a not for profit?
My best,

    August 22, 2016 at 8:13 pm

Personally, I do not use .org when I know all my sites will have some monetizing on them. When I go to other sites and see they are using them the same as a .com, I don’t care, but I know there are a lot who do. A lot of people will use .org because they can not find any .com names they want but they still want a domain name the search engines will give a high ranking when they use it. Rather than using one of the domain name extensions which have lower ranking by the search engines they use up the nonprofit names for business.

All the search engines need to do if they want to make a distinction make sure people use the .org the way they were meant to be, is use their bots to check the links and if they go to Amazon and other affiliate products, etc. drop them with no further indexing. I think that would be the quickest and easiest way to get the word out.

Mind you there would be a lot of unhappy campers who have been using domain names with .org extensions, not for a nonprofit organization but as a full commercial site.

This is great information. You are very knowledgable in your field. I am going to school now to be a computer tech. I use your site to help me with a lot of my homework and computer classes. I thank you so much for this information. I will share and bookmark your website.

    August 26, 2016 at 10:54 am

In the beginning, there can be lots of information to wrap your head around and with the progression of the Internet things keep changing, and there is always new development.

This site can certainly help out with some of the issues we all face when getting started and needing the resources for carrying on in the development of our sites.

Regarding your article on the Best Online Businesses Start-up, I agree that it doesn’t take much to start an online business today.
I usually tell my students, if they are prepared to work hard, then they probably won’t need more that $1000. This is because they will need some money to cover their overhead until the business starts bring in some revenue.
However, if they are more laid back about getting started, the will probably need more.

    November 8, 2016 at 11:58 am

Hi James, and I would have to say you are giving your students some excellent advice. Even though businesses do cost money to start, creating a business on the Internet is a lot cheaper to do on average compared to offline companies.

Some people have talked about building online businesses for free, but I do know that it took them a very long time and was a massive amount of searching and figuring everything out to make them work out to create an income.

Telling your students up front to be prepared to payout for the major things to make it happen with the knowledge they still need to put the work in will make for successful online marketers.

Nice article! It was very informative. I know most people (Myself included) get really overwhelmed when that first start learning about the internet. It’s a lot to take in!That was interesting about the origins of .net and .org. Lol Maybe that’s a ridiculous thing to say, but I’m just constantly amazed by how many websites there are out there!
Wishing you all joy

    February 26, 2017 at 11:30 am

Hi, Madelaine and thanks for stopping by and writing a comment. As you mentioned, there is a pile of information to be learned, and the number of sites is continuing to increase by the day. The best thing that any of use can do is make sure that we are always in the know about what is happening and knowing what we need to do if we want to be part of the online world.

The best way I know how to do this is by being plugged in with a community that deals with all the issues for the area you wish to know about while online. By staying connected with such a group, you’ll always be able to stay ahead of the changes or at least stay with them as they happen. For anyone wanting a successful online business then Wealthy Affiliate and their community can do that for you.

July 6, 2017 at 1:22 pm

Wow! I have never seen this well detailed information on website hosting and domain name for the time I’ve been scouring the web.

I just discovered there is a way you could earn money through a website and was just getting into the mechanics of it.

This gave me plenty of insight. Can you help me make online with your strategy? As in can you personally coach me? I’m willing to pay for the coaching.

Waiting to get your response sir,

Thanks in advance.

    July 7, 2017 at 3:09 pm

I certainly appreciate the offer to be paid for being a mentor for coaching but I’ll explain how you can get what you need for free. You or anyone else can learn and create an income source of revenue from the Internet without having to pay extra money.

All businesses will cost money one way or the other. Some have larger start up cost or operating costs to keep them going. Having a business on the Internet is different from most other forms of companies people create due to the simplicity to get started and how cheap you can start and operate your business. Some people still may pay out larger sums to speed things up or try to make more money faster as long as they do the right things.

To keep costs down and make an online business work, you’ll need to have a website, hosting, training and keeping up to date with all the latest methods. Having a mentor or many senior web marketers that know what to do will save you time and money.

The best place to date that I have found that can teach you how to create and build a successful website is with Wealthy Affiliate. I have used other providers but none of the others were as complete with such an excellent community to answer any questions you may have.

My website has free info and anyone who joins me in Wealthy Affiliate not only has my help with their sites etc. but they also have the support of the whole community which does have others that know a lot more than I do in certain areas. Most other places you host your site will cost you much more to get all the training and information you’ll require becoming successful in comparison.

Wealthy Affiliate is the place to get started that will keep you on the right path without overpaying for what you’ll need to learn and do to become successful.
