What is a Domain Name and how?

What is a Domain Name and how? Get the answers to what a domain name is and how and where you can purchase one or perhaps you can use a free domain name? The responses to these questions and much more will be answered. In fact, at this website, you’ll be able to get the information you’ll need if you would like to know all that it takes to have a successful online business as well.

To get started on what a domain name is, one could look at the “Webopedia definition” which will explain how the name makes up part of the URL address, and they mention about some of the different extensions used “.com, .net, .org, .us, etc.” For most people as I had referred to in my homepage for this site, a domain name is a virtual address that you can use for directing people to what is a domain name and how to useyour website. What you use the site for will be totally up to each to whether you just want to pass on information, collect it or make money from having your website.

Most people today are either blogging or running a business for money, and many have combined both. When you understand that every website is based on a unique domain name which you can see in the browser on your computer or device you’re using to access the Internet, it becomes clear why some people and companies call them properties or any other name that relates them to a home, etc.

Domain names get registered in the same concept as many places register company names. If you want to have a domain name for an online business for instance, then you would need to do a name search to see if it’s available for you to purchase. Depending on what you choose to pick for a domain name it could be available or already taken. Unlike a business name title search which can take days and cost money for doing the search, domain names can be searched for free and are nearly instantaneous in response to being available or not. Once you do find an available name, you’ll pay less for the registration of a domain name than a name for an offline business.

Once you see about buying a domain name, you will be required to make yearly payments if you want to keep it. You do have options with most businesses that offer this service to renew or purchase for two or more years if you wish. The biggest consideration that I would put out to anyone new to getting into having an online presence would be to hold off on any domain name purchases until you know what it is your planning on doing.

Here are some considerations:

You want to have a Blog
You wish to do some online scrapbooking
You want a website to generate an online income
You already have a business and want to take it online

You wish to have a Blog

If your plan is to have a blog, then you may find you can choose some other options than purchasing a domain name then having to pay for hosting. Depending on what you want to blog about some people are using Facebook as their platform to carry out their blogging for free. I’m sure people are utilizing many of the different social medias to accommodate their quest for blogging what is a domain name and how to blog with social mediawithout having to go through purchasing a domain name. Another way that people are blogging is by using a free website.

When you use a free website that offers a free hosting package then once again you’ll be able to have a blog put up online. The thing to remember with these types of packages, is you’re operating a unique sub-domain name from the company offering you the package. They own a domain name which you will add your unique name in front of their’s separated by a period, so the Internet understands the addressing on how to point to your domain name to pull up your website when somebody is looking for you in the browser.

Having your domain name registered and paying for a package is easier for getting traffic than working with sub-domains when you know what you’re doing. By knowing what you’re doing, I’m referring to understanding about SEO which stands for Search Engine Optimization for those new to the acronym. All domain names are not equally the same in performance and therefore, do not receive the same traffic. I’ll explain this in another post to give you a better understanding of SEO and the relationship of the domain name you choose. It’s for this reason, I mentioned not to purchase a domain name right away until you know what you want to accomplish, or you will discover the hard way, to get traffic to your site, it will take more time, money or both.

I can offer you a free package that will save you time and money,
to get a better grasp on figuring things out the right way!

You want to do some online scrapbooking

domain name how to for scrapbooking

When doing an online scrapbooking so friends and family can see your creations from any location, you can pay to have a domain name and to host. I can offer you a great deal but for something as straightforward and as simple as this application would be, you could just use the free package that I have to offer people. I would only consider paying money out for such a website if you needed a lot of help with setting up a website and staying on top of all the changes that regularly happen with the Internet. There are only two packages that I deal with, FREE and PREMIUM of which both are great and one of the best deals on the Internet today.

You want a website to generate an online income

Having an online presence to generate revenue is something that many people want to do, but where the problem comes in is how to accomplish that. That’s why this website deals with what is a domain name and how to do the different things required to make this all happen for you. Even though I have been dealing with the Internet for about ten years know, I have seen many package deals and systems to show you how with many mixed results. I have many friends as you probably do that have tried many different things to end up with nothing to show but an empty bank account.

The good news is that any of the legitimate websites that are geared to help you succeed should have a trial period where you can have an opportunity to see what they offer. For all the ones that require money up front, just walk away. They have nothing to offer; that’s why they want your money up front. Most systems have many up sales and are very expensive; again this is why I mentioned not to buy into anything to quickly.

When you want to generate an income online, you need only to spend your money on what works and what’s required to make it work, working an online business is for you to make money not pay it all out to others.

To get the inside scoop if you want to call it that,

You already have a business and want to take it online

If you’re in the same position I was about ten years ago, you have an offline business you wish to display online. At the time for me, I was just using the online presence for my local area unlike now. Like most I had my business, but there was nothing online. When you already have an existing business, you want to get your domain name to be the same. Depending on what you called your business this may not be a problem, but then again the name could be taken. If that is the case, then you may need to add dashes or change from a “.com” extension to possibly a country extension like “.us” if you live in the United States or “.ca” for Canada. Depending on the name you have will determine the availability or inventive you need to be to get something that works.

The biggest thing to remember about having an offline company and then taking it online is the fact you’ll end up purchasing a domain name to match up with your business. You’ll need to have a hosting package that will cost you money for you to do what you need to do to get the traffic you’ll require.

I’ve already dealt with this issue for the last ten years
and can show you the best package I came up with
to make my online presence as simple as possible!

It seems like good domain names are getting harder to come by now with so many people with their own websites. When looking at how to start a website – everyone does want money. That is a big barrier for me. I like that I can try before I buy with the product you recommended.

It is getting harder and that’s part of the reason all the different extensions have been coming out to allow for more domain names as more people are getting involved. The free and premium package I offer is great for people to learn what they require first before spending out money on things they probably do not require.

This site will also get into better ways of figuring out the best way to purchase a domain name that will deliver better and faster traffic for your application in later posts to come.

Hey Travis,
Great article on domain names, how I wished I had come across this page of yours sooner. When I first started online, I had no idea what’s the difference between a domain, a webhost and a website, I thought they are all the same.

After a month of reading and asking random people to explain, only then did I understand the whole thing. Then there’s the whole SEO and keywords thing and I was back at square one.

Funny how we all have different paths in starting a venture lol, I had no idea how to create a website but I created one nonetheless. Thanks for sharing this, much appreciated.

I suppose there could be many paths just as there are many people all coming to the Internet to start making money online. No one particular method would be the only way to get ahead. I know when I discovered Wealthy Affiliate, it was the best I’ve ever seen to build and host my websites on compared to any other package.

There have been many people trying other solutions with no satisfaction and I do know of some others that are making money by different means that require major investments. I wanted a cheap method that could still give great results without the costly outlay of money.

To everybody making money, my hat is off to you and anybody looking to make money I have found a place to get started and make it happen.

Hi Travis
I got much more clarity on the essence of domain names from your article.Thank you very much for this.

I have heard that buying domain names, can be valuable ‘real estate’ as time goes on.Is this true?

I am interested more particulary in building an online business and allowing it to sustain me for generations to come.

I have heard about Wealthy Affiliate and now that you have given me the low down on domain, I am ready to take the next step.

Thanks for this awesome information.

There are people that purchase domain names like real estate but only key domain names that people would tend to want would be any good. Most people will just come up with a new name when they realise what they may have wanted is taken. There are some that will pay extra for a name but it is hard to know which ones will bring in the extra money.

Before you purchase a domain name double check to see how many people search the keywords that make up your name. The more searches with the least amount of compitition for the domain name the better.

Hey Travis, cool post it was simple to read with a lot of information, when I first started here on wealthy Affiliate I had no idea where to run, but learning the courses it becomes much easier to understand, I had a hard time understanding SEO, but now I got the hang of it. This post will really help newcomers understand what is a domain.

Like most things you need to start somewhere. The problem with the Internet is to know where is the right place to start. Now that I have been on the Internet for over ten years and I’m approaching one year with Wealthy Affiliate, I know if anybody is looking for a place to start or carry on, then this is the place to do it.

It takes a lot to get started with knowing what you need to do to be successful. It also takes a lot of updating to stay on top of things and Wealthy Affiliate and the community will make that a lot simpler.

Yes, good domain names are harder to come by. It seems the best ones are taken. But, you can always add a few words in front of the domain your are looking for. Example; bestdomainnames.com. Use “the” in front of the domain name or add a trailing “today” will also work. Your imagination will wonders once you start to doing this.

    Travis

    March 24, 2016 at 8:30 pm

That is certainly an other way to come up with a domain name, but you’ll also find if you use a program such as Jaaxy that I use, just by adding an “s” to make one of the words plural can cut most of the natural traffic off. When you do keyword searches, you’ll be able to see which domain names will generate a lot of natural traffic before you even begin with all the extra SEO to create traffic.

If you just randomly add a word or two you may end up having to generate just about all the traffic to get people to your site.

Hi There,

This is a very useful article you have posted on domain names. when I created my first website, I didn’t really know what I was doing and I ended up selecting a very poor site name which really did affect my ranking due to the competition. I have now created another website where the name has much less competition. Therefore has ranked much better. The wealthy affiliate looks very interesting, how long have you been a member? how long did it take before you started making money from it? Many Thanks Naeem

I started a year ago with Wealthy Affiliate and you can read a little more at my About page.

It took me eight months to start making money which I have done for the last four months to date. Depending on what your site is about and if you pay extra for PPC, Google Adsense etc. will determine when and how much money you will make. I only pay for the premium membership with Wealthy Affiliate and Jaaxy. If I double my online income each year I’ll be retired in three years from now which I’ve been told is not that hard to do when you have the knowledge of Wealthy Affiliate and the community to help.

HI there,

The free trail of wealthy affiliate is quite brilliant, no card or anything was required. Really good step by step training and yes..I did manage to set up a free website.

The free trial is just like a taster, a sample of what is to come. I cant wait to go premium!

    Travis

    April 14, 2016 at 6:48 pm

The great thing about going premium is you get to keep full access to all the extra training and course matter not to mention everything else that comes down the line. You’re not bomb barded with up sales and you have enough to create a successful business.

Having the community which also offers training from many, and when you have questions there are plenty of people to help you out. It’s the best I have found in the last eleven years.

Domain names are critical when it comes to making any website or online business, but they aren’t always simple. After all, there are so many sites out there already and they use a wide variety of different domain names.

You’re right that people might be needing to use a domain name for all sorts of reasons. It’s also true that the specific site you are making is going to significantly influence the type of domain name that you need.

    Travis

    April 26, 2016 at 1:31 am

For anyone new getting into having an online presence should take their time with choosing a domain name that will suit the type of business they want to do and possibly already have traffic for the keywords. The more searches on the keywords and lower competition the quicker the ranking and traffic will produce.

As far as how long it will take to get to page one will depend on the niche chosen.

Hey, Travis!

I recently joined Wealthy Affiliate myself. I’d been messing around with internet marketing for several years without much success.

The domain name that I chose for my site back then was not very effective. It was a .org domain because I couldn’t get it with a .com so I just settled for that.

On top of all of that, I got hooked up with a training program that was really big on “black hat” Tactics that were already outdated because of the google panda/penguin change.

I changed training programs and it just flat out fell short. they only taught me half what I needed to know.

Wealthy Affiliate is #1 on the internet and #1 in my book as well.

BTW. Great post. You might be able to save some people the trouble that I had to go through.

    Travis

    April 26, 2016 at 9:24 am

I’m familiar with the practice of black hat tactics from other people I know on the internet and believe this is part of why the search engines have also progressed to omit the use and practice of keyword stuffing etc.

Wealthy Affiliate teaches the best practices and stays away from trying to use dangerous short cuts that will get your website banded from the search engines.

When people learn what a domain name is and how to purchase the right one for their application. Do the proper wibesite builder techniques to insure proper SEO from all the pages/posts they create, their site not get band from the search enginges.

They will find they will achieve a better ranking and the site will be set up for the long run to product a real income online.

To me, domain names is something that belongs to us once we get one. I would like to engrave my domain name into the hearts of the crowd once they hear of it.

Do you have any ideas of how to make your domain name really catchy? It’s kind of like google.

Wealthy affiliate seems pretty interesting. I will check that out later too.

    Travis

    May 19, 2016 at 11:37 pm

The big thing to remember about having a catchy name like Google is you need to generate all the traffic to get the name out there. Whenever you get into branding, in most cases nobody knows how you are until you reach them.

Domain names created from keyword phrases already have people making entries into Google search.

    Just something to think about.

Wow, this is information is so easy to understand. I think a lot of tech minded people forget how much they know and don’t realise how much jargon they use when they try to explain tech stuff. And they don’t know how much they need to break down information for others to understand. Wish I had come across this page sooner, because it really simplifies it!!!
A lot of other websites use jargon, without really explaining what the terms mean. You’ve done a great job of breaking it down.

Before going on my own and starting a business using the Internet I use to teach electronics to the component level on classified equipment and other high-end avionics. Most people would not be able to conceive or even try to relate to what I use to do and know other than those in the same profession.

The fact is you can simplify most things without trying to come across like you need to be some kind of genius to understand. You should be able to do the opposite and make it seem as simple as possible by relating as much as possible to people with what they do know. That way they can learn faster and understand what they need to know.

Hi there,

Travis, you have mentioned a number of different domain extensions (. com, .net and so on) and more and more new extensions and being added everyday it seems, I am half expecting .Olympicgames2016 to be a new extension later this year!

Which type of extension is seen as the being the best in terms of SEO?

I tend to stick with .com due to it being the most memorable vs .London or .travel (both valid real extensions) if you know what I mean.

    Travis

    June 23, 2016 at 11:01 pm

The extension that you are using .com was what the internet started with as a top level domain extension and is still rated as the best to use and get ranked with for your site. There are others that follow, but I would stick with .com as much as possible.

Where I’m Canadian, I did purchase my business domain name with a .ca as well as the .com, just so nobody in Canada could use my name on the internet.

Great post on domain names. I have helped others get domain names and what to name them that would help get users to their website. From my experience, there are a lot of people who don’t know how to set up domain names. I hope you get many people to learn from your website.

    Travis

    July 10, 2016 at 10:14 am

Thanks, Kevin and I hope that people either make it to my site or one like it so either way they get the right information to make an informed decision to how to proceed with their online venture. There are a lot of great and informative websites, but it’s all the scammers we all need to watch out for and hopefully more people will start to realize how to avoid them.

Some excellent reasons why everyone should have a website.

I am a member of Wealthy Affiliate already and am really happy there, but you have given me a great idea. I love scrapbooking, so maybe I should use one of my free websites for this pursuit. An excellent way to share with the rest of the family.

    Travis

    August 9, 2016 at 10:01 am

Hi Michel and using one of the free websites that are at your disposal is an excellent idea for scrapbooking. You already have a membership, and you can use one of the many free sites to generate the whole thing for free. You can also have a password protected site and have it not indexed by the search engines to keep it private just for your friends and family.

That is one of the great things about having a domain name is you can create sub-domains which are websites in their right or simply us the free sites in a case of setting up a scrapbooking area.

The entire issue of domain names has evolved in recent years. At one time, the rage was to get exact match domain names. I don’t think that makes any difference now and they are probably hard to find anyway.

I think the shorter and simpler the domain name, the better.

What are your thoughts on .com, .net and .org domain names?

    Travis

    October 1, 2016 at 11:11 am

Each of the domain name extensions you mentioned is all high level which the search engines favor. There are many different extensions to try and keep up with the demand for all the people looking to have a presence online.

The names people would like to have are getting harder to find and are usually already taken as more people get online and start buying everything up for their online businesses. As you have mentioned your name does not have to be exactly what you do even though that will help but the shorter and simpler you make your domain name to be remembered is the best way to go.
