What Is A Free Website?

what is a free website

Step #7 of Ten

what about starting an online business intro

When considering what is a free website you should also be including a hosting package. Without a hosting package, your site will never be seen online by others. Your free website is a place where you can have creative content, images, multimedia with links to take your visitors to the areas you choose.

When you build a site, it will have a purpose to accomplish something for your readers.

A free website could be used for:

  • Website for freeWriters and Bloggers
  • Business Professionals
  • Online Marketers
  • Niche Marketing
  • Artists of all types
  • Home Workers
  • Anyone Wanting Extra or Full-time Income

The important thing to remember with a free website is knowing what the limitations are as some companies do not allow for business operations without upgrading. The one which I recommend does enable you to benefit from all of the followings which some other packages with other companies may not.

Free website and hosting benefits:

  • Get your free website and hosting no time limits
  • You receive a free sub-domain with your account
  • Maintenance and support
  • Thousands of extra plugins
  • Wide variety of themes and templates
  • Mobile device friendly
  • Allowed to monetize

Free Website Limitations

All packages across the Internet do have limitations on them. What matters most is what your actual application for having a website will be. An example would be if you decided that having a website to showcase an online scrapbooking collection. You would be able to password protect your site and only have friends and family from around the world to view your content.

what is a free website limitationsThen again you may still want the site but with no password protection so you’d be able to make money selling the software from Amazon to create digital scrapbooking.

In either case, some free website packages allow the first site for free but not the second and there are other providers like the one I’m with that will allow both options free of charge for as long as you like.

You need to know what is available to you as a free option. What the upgrade consists of, if it’s one or more that they may offer and what the cost will be. Free is great when it provides you with all that you need! But if your circumstances were to change, does the current provider have what you’ll need for future development.

Another example would be:

With a free website that you get to keep for zero dollars, you will be using a sub-domain with hosting supplied by the provider. When you see about generating traffic to your site, the sub-domain name does not rank as well as an appropriately chosen domain name.

In Step #9 you will see how this all correlates when choosing keywords for getting traffic to your site. An actual domain name can be chosen for existing traffic already in place. For your free website to have a domain name for a faster and more popular online presence will mean you will most likely need to upgrade.

Can a Free Website be Successful?

What is a free website be successful?Yes, it can! But in order for it to be successful, this is what will be required!

  • Main traffic is generated by pages/posts with no real reliance on sub-domain name
  • Social media still works out the same
  • Most chosen marketing concepts work
  • Some places do not allow sub-domains
  • Working with limited support without upgrading
  • Spend a lot of extra time surfing the net for answers

You can build a successful online presence with a free package but it will take considerable, extra time to make it happen. Free will only get you so far and you will need to be able to learn and keep up to date with all the changes happening around you to attempt to become successful.

In the final Step #10 when you’ll be able to see the laid out options to what you can expect with starting an online business, I will explain the procedures I took and why and what the possible differences would be if I chose other options. From there you will be able to decide for yourself what works best for you. So from answering the question What is a free website? it’s now time to check out Step #8.

I can also recommend to build the website with sitebuilder. It’s easy and fast so literally anyone can do it in a few minutes or if you are fast even in 30 seconds.

But I believe that in the course of time one need to buy own domain because as you said there are some limitations in sub-domains. When one has the own domain there is more freedom and it’s quite cheap. Own domain name costs $10/year and the good domain hosting can be found for about $50/year. What do you think?

    April 24, 2016 at 9:00 pm

Changing up to having your own domain name is better in the long run. You can also find cheap hosting companies for around $50/year as you mentioned but I would only recommend that to somebody well versed with knowing how the Internet works for making money.

Anyone new to earning an income online or doesn’t want to spend a lot of extra time surfing the web to stay on top of changes that constantly happen would be better of having a full package like the premium one which I also use.

Even though I actually know how to program as I use to build my websites in the past by programming them, my time is much to valuable, I’d rather be doing things with my family.

I would like to start a website and was looking into free providers. I realize that I will need to use a subdomain, but I don’t know if I will stick with this website, so I don’t want to pay for my own domain and hosting just yet.

I have looked into free wordpress sites and was going to give that a try, but then I read your article.

What is siterubix? I have not heard of this before.

    May 2, 2016 at 8:19 pm

Hi Simone, and to answer your question, siterubix is the subdomain that is used for the free websites from Wealthy Affiliate. They will give you up to two free sites plus hosting for as long as you like to test or use for an online presence.

You will also get full access to the community for seven days were you could ask as many questions as you can think of to learn more about the packages and anything on your mind about having an online presence.

      May 3, 2016 at 1:35 pm

Thanks Travis. So if I create a free account with Wealthy Affiliate I will be able to make 2 websites also for free with the siterubix subdomain? I think that is what you are saying. If that is the case, I will give it a try!

        May 3, 2016 at 10:58 pm

That is correct Simone. You will also receive a 7-day full access for the community when you first sign up. Having that week can give you the opportunity to ask lots of questions to figure out just exactly what you can expect as a member at Wealthy Affiliate. So do not hesitate to ask what you’d like to know as there are plenty of people ready to help out any way they can.

I like the idea of creating a free website but I don’t like the idea of owning a sub-domain.

To me it looks a bit tacky and hard to remember.

Is this really free or another con job that will eventually charge me money to use?

I have no money as is, so can’t afford any up-sells. Does Site Rubix give free hosting as well?

    May 23, 2016 at 11:32 am

That is one of the nice things about dealing with Wealthy Affiliate as there is no time limit to having your free website and there are no up sales to hassle you either.

The only reason you can choose to pay money is if you do not want a sub-domain as you mentioned and want full access to the community and everything Wealthy Affiliate has to offer.

You never have to upgrade to premium but anyone serious with having a successful business knows you need to invest some money if you plan on making a lot of money.

June 6, 2016 at 1:23 pm

A free website sounds very tempting but I don’t understand how it can be completely free? Who pays for your hosting?

It’s interesting as I Would like to have a try to play around with a few ideas, and don’t want to pay out for a a proper package. Do you think this could be somethign I could use your recommendation for?

    June 6, 2016 at 8:46 pm

The website and hosting are both free. Wealthy Affiliate knows that only a few people will stay with the free package. Having a free package is great for having a basic online presence to experiment with, do some digital scrapbooking for friends and family etc.

For people wanting to make money online, this can still work but you need to spend a lot of extra time researching for all the information you may not already know about doing an online business. With the premium package, you have Wealthy Affiliate and the community helping you to learn all the things you need to know saving you many hours from having to search for it online and then figure out what is good and up to date.

You will learn faster and stand a better chance of succeeding with your online business with all the key steps laid out for you then trying to figure it all out the hard way.

That’s why Wealthy Affiliate will give out free websites and hosting knowing most people will upgrade but you can have the freebie’s for as long as you like.

Hi Travis, thanks for letting me provide a comment to your web page.
First and before all, I really like the presentation, i.e. the page is very clear and easy to read, the blue/white give me a positive feel , I like the images, as they are amusing (as in not too serious, which you see a lot..) page is easy to use, finding categories etc. and not filled with ads.
In combination with the presentation, your writing is clear and keeps me wanting to read on.
Would it be an option to add more images than the one for a free website, I mean could you compare the Free and Non-Free website options next to each other with the example of an image for both?
Do I miss a header at the beginning, to catch the attention and simplify the overview of the page, as you continue below with 2 headers on Limitations and Successful?
I hope this comment is what you were looking for, let me know. If you want to throw a look at my site ihaveseenthat, that would be great too.
Best, Jan

    June 28, 2016 at 12:44 am

Thanks for the comment Jan and showing images for a free website and also a paid site within the same post is can be done and I’ll probably take you up on that idea at a later date for another post showing options and comparisons.

At present this site is relatively new so I still have a lot of things to fix and straighten out but I’m always open to ways to make the site better for the viewers and keeping things in line with helping others. So again thanks for your time and comment always appreachiated.

I love this write up. I personally used one of sites rubix free websites for quite a while and have only recently brought my own domain.

I got on it with it extremely well, and found it so user friendly.

I will always start any new websites with site rubix from now on

    July 16, 2016 at 10:35 am

Using the free sites is a good way to get things started and figuring out what and how you want to do things. One of the nice things to remember is how easy it is to transfer your site over to a new domain. When you do, you can have the same theme so everything will look the same or load it up with a new theme.

If you do the transfer, I suggest it over to your new domain name with the same theme you are used to. Once it has been transferred correctly, you can double check everything then change things up afterward.

Thank you, Travis, for your suggestions on how to build a free website! I will have to take a look at this SiteRubix builder you referred, but will have to think of a cool name first!

Personally, I never was tech savvy so I certainly can appreciate that the hosting is also included!

What do you suggest as far as training and support? I look forward to your recommendation. Thanks again 🙂

    August 21, 2016 at 12:18 pm

As I mention in many of the posts throughout this site, you can build a successful business with the free websites. These free sites have the least amount of limitations that I have seen from any other provider so far. Having a free website with minimum limitations and as much flexibility that the free package I can offer you is the best route for a free site.

For the training and support, it would be best to upgrade to premium for a small fee and get full access to everything Wealthy Affiliate has to offer.

In the case where you want everything for free then I suggest the free websites I offer and use the free resources I have found for other sites that are out there to help people the same as me. These sites will help you out with images among other necessities you’ll need to be successful online. I will also be adding more resources to my site as I keep tracking more down.

What I have not found for my resources to help others with you will also be able to track sites down to supply you with what you may need.

Ultimately Wealthy Affiliates premium package will save you a lot of time, and when you consider doing a business justice, it does cost money, and Wealthy Affiliate will save you a lot of money for what you get and most importantly what you’ll end up saving from what you learn.

I’ve tried many free websites and they have worked. One of my favorite when talking free is Blogger. However, I personally like to have my own domain where I can grow from. It’s my property. When I’m ready to sell it I can gain a profit from it. I like that. The platform I like for my sites above all others is WordPress. However, if someone is just starting out then perhaps building from a free site makes sense. For that purpose I would highly recommend your SiteRubix system mentioned above. I’ve tried it and it works. The best part is that when it comes time to move everything from a free site to one that is paid the integration of SiteRubix makes it practically seamless.

    November 4, 2016 at 8:28 pm

Like you, I believe anyone looking at building a site should use a free package first, and the one with my provider is an excellent choice as you have fewer limitations compared to all the functions and features some of the other providers put on their platforms. Also as you mentioned, SiteRubix does allow you to transfer your site. Many other sites do not allow a transfer of a free site hosted by them and even sites you are paying for may not be able to be transferred.

Whether you’re looking for a free or paid site, Wealthy Affiliate offers the best packages with the most functions and features and least amount of limitations.

HI Travis, thank you so much for showing me how to prevent scams online my husband and I have already had problems with scams online with building a website. they charged us a lot of money. and did not do as they said. sometimes with all the research you do is still not enough. with my husband’s illness, we were trying to find some information about a reverse mortgage all the information on the internet was very unfavorable. you give me some other areas to check we are so very happy we found your website if you have any other information that would help us please let us know. thank you very much

    November 5, 2016 at 10:51 am

Happy to hear this article was of some help to you. Sorry to hear about your husband’s health condition and I do not know a great deal about reverse mortgages except you want to be very careful if you go ahead with doing one. Be careful who you choose to do it with as many will take advantage of a situation. There are a lot of companies that will have the paperwork set up for their benefit and take your home from you when you do not meet and stay with the fine print.

Making the website building process is essential for allowing most people the opportunity to begin establishing an online presence. A free website theme and free hosting is a great idea. I’m currently starting a blog. Do you have any recommendations for free or cheap hosting? Does Siterubix come with free hosting?

    February 16, 2017 at 12:08 pm

Siterubix offers you two free websites that you can build with hosting in a package. You’ll discover that you will have the most functions and features with the least amount of limitations than any other providers offer. Wealthy Affiliate provides such a fantastic full business opportunity from provider services to full on education for having a successful business with continues training for affiliate marketing, that other provider will not compete with their free package against WA’s free package.
