Step #6 of Ten
For those wanting to know what is a free website builder, then we need to consider whether we are talking about an online or offline website builder to answer your question.
Offline Website Builders
There are Offline Website Builders such as the software package by Mobirise. This software program can be downloaded onto your computer so you’ll be able to create a website so that it can be published to your site later to any host. Offline HTML creator software will make it possible to create a cost efficient site by you choosing a template or create one. Use the drag and drop functions for different features for your text, images and any multimedia you may have.
The software is easy to use and has a wide variety of templates to use for different purposes in your design. Whether you require e-commerce or just a regular blog you’ll be able to create one no problem. The platform will work on computer browsers, tablets, and smartphones so that all traffic to your website is possible for proper access.
You gain the advantages of being able to work offline, publishing to any host by not depending on a website builder provider.
Online Website Builders
Most people will be looking for the Online Website Builders which are also easy to create a site with and offer some different advantages over the offline type. To refresh as a recap from the previous post for those who have read it and give a short spiel for online website builders, we had mentioned about having the builder and hosting in one spot and being able to get help with any issues if needed.
The biggest thing with all the free offers out there is, take the time you need to figure them out, so you know how to use the software. If you do not understand how to work your way around software and figuring things out on your own, the limited help you’ll receive will not be enough. Most of these sites will all have at least one upgrade if not multiple depending on the type of site you need.
As previously mentioned website builders require no software code experience to use them. You can quickly build, design and organise your site to look the way you want from the many templates. Another thing to keep in mind is anything that is free, has it’s limitations to how many features and functions you’ll be able to use. These restrictions could prove to be very frustrating depending on what type of website you require; not all packages are created equally.
The website builder itself will usually always be free and will always come with a sub-domain which I’ll cover more in Step #8. If they do offer a domain name for free, it is usually for one year then you’ll pay the yearly rate for the domain name and possible a monthly for a new hosting package to use the domain name. Having your personal domain name usually means your on a monthly or yearly payment package. If you are, these packages give you far more than the free package.
Another advantage to having the free online website builder is not having to use an offline one that needs to be loaded on your device. The online software will always be updated by the hosting company you’re dealing with including all security for the sites and monitoring.
Before settling for a website builder, it is advisable to take notice of what exactly you would be getting in the package. As I mentioned each company will have two or more packages. The first package is the free one which is going to be the one with the least amount of flexibility to the second or however many packages the company has in place. With the provider I’m with, there are only two packages. One that is free that is better than most other free packages out there but the second package is fully loaded with everything included which some other companies cannot even match after multiple upgrades.
A lot of these free sites are set up where you have very few templates to choose from, a limited number of pages your allowed to create, limited disk space, bandwidth for creating your site. Some even have a set number of versions you can use before you need to upgrade. Time limits on how long you can have a free site for before your required to upgrade and especially if you’re on an actual domain name. For some of these free website builders, you need to consider the type of URL’s they create.
Another consideration would be whether you have access to having galleries, password protection areas, and RSS capabilities if you require them. The provider I use has a simple chart you can use to see the difference which you can see below. In fact, you can check out this post- Free Website Building And Hosting to see what is offered in much more detail. The truth is, their full access means exactly that. The package I have is so comprehensive, that it covers more bases than any other company that I’ve see to date so far.
One of the biggest issues with dealing with the Internet is learning what is required and staying up to date. That is where the free packages fall short leaving you to spend countless hours researching to try and stay up to date to make your website successful. You see your site is just one small piece of the puzzle and you need to know the rest. It’s up to you to decide how you will do that. Now that you know What is A free Website Builder and some of the things to expect, it’s time to take a closer look on this topic about free websites in the next lesson.
