Step #9 of Ten

what about starting an online business intro

I’ve been asked many times, what is a keyword research for? When it comes to the Internet, I would say it starts at the beginning all the way to the end of your SEO marketing for a successful online business. When people want to find something, they type the keywords into their search box. If you did the proper keyword research and implemented them as part of your content for proper SEO then, your page/post will appear.

what is a keyword research for SEOYou see without knowing what people are looking for and how they are looking for it, your website will not receive the proper traffic. You need to understand how to rank for the right keywords by knowing your market’s keyword usage. This way you’ll learn which keywords and phrases target the customers you want as you start to understand your customer’s needs by targeting with SEO on your side.

To me, keyword research will be one of the most important things you need to do if you plan on getting not only a successful online business operational but for you to speed up the process. Without it, I believe it’s like traveling blind. You do not want just any visitors showing up to your site, what you’re really after is qualifying visitors.

A simple example of this will be if you are selling power tools for renovations.

If you receive a thousand visitors to your site looking to purchase garden tools, then your traffic will not convert.
Now even if you only receive a hundred visitors but this time they are looking for tools to renovate with, you very well could make some sales.

You need traffic, but you want the right kind of traffic. With proper keyword research, you would be able to find out what people are purchasing and to what degree. You would be aware of any changes in the marketplace by conditions, products, services and the content the visitors are actively searching out.

How To Choose Keywords

You are going to have a website that will ultimately have your content, and you will be using keywords to attract your visitors. Again if you are not using a keyword tool, then you are essentially for all intensive purposes operating blind. Each page/post you write needs to be about something your visitors require. You need keywords or phrases to get them there so when they type into the search box; your keywords match what they are looking for which brings your page/post in front of them.

what is a keyword research for marketingThe same way you can have your page show for what they are searching for, you can also know and enter pages/posts for what they want most.

Take the power tools as another example again:

  • Drill
  • Circular saw
  • Cordless Drill
  • Cordless Power Saw

From me listing these four types of tools do you know which one sells better than the other? Without a keyword research tool, there is no way of knowing. Let me throw another variable into the mix. When it comes to the Internet, doing a search for any of those four is a waste of time as they are too general and not specific enough. Through Keyword research, you would find out that there is too much competition to attract any potential visitors trying to use them as keywords.

What you would discover is the long tail keywords would end up working better. Long tail keywords are phrases or more detailed descriptions of what people enter into the search box to find what they want.

what is a keyword research for targetingHere is another example of the keyword phrase people use.

  • Dewalt cordless power drill
  • Dewalt 18 volt cordless power drill
  • Dewalt 18 volt cordless drill

All three of these you could compete with, but you’ll find the second entry has less than ten people per month searching that phrase, no need to waste your time. The first entry has about nine searches where the third one had six times that.

Now instead of settling for any of those keywords with a little more checking, Dewalt hammer drill comes in at 184 visitors. By doing the keyword research, you’ll be able to target the best keywords and phrases for your website pages/posts.

Starting Your Business With Keyword Research

The same way you would use a keyword research tool to figure out what keywords or phrase you will use to generate the required traffic you need on your pages/posts. It is a good idea also to use it to define the niche and name of your business as well.

In the beginning, I made the same mistake as many others have, but you will have the opportunity to skip this error as I explain what it is. I have an offline business as people tend to call a brick and mortar that can exist without any Internet. My company is TD Remodeling and for an offline business, the name is fine. Now that I’m also doing online business with this endeavor, the actual name as far as a keyword goes for the search engine is crap. Less than 10 people per month will enter this name for a search. I have to rely on all the pages/posts that I have placed proper keywords in, to get all my traffic that I now receive by the thousands.

what is a keyword research for business name

So when I first started just over a year ago with this new provider, before learning the difference and redesigning TD Remodeling, I set up a test site which I called Say It With Photographs picking out a name as I normally would. This website also requires my pages/posts to generate the traffic as the name is also crap for keyword entry. After learning and working the test site, it was not until I started making money that I thought about helping others repeat what I have done minus the mistake with choosing a name.

After learning and working the test site, it was not until I started making money that I thought about helping others repeat what I have done minus the mistake with choosing a name.

Before we finish this step and move over to the last and final step, I want to explain the power of having a keyword tool for proper research and how it can save you money and help you earn money faster.

Most people pick names as I had in the past for my offline business and the first one as a test site last year April 2015 to learn about making money online. The name has no traffic value until you brand it. Branding just means that you have become so popular, people come to you because they know who you are for what you have to offer. It takes a lot of time and money to get there.

There are companies out there that will sell you traffic; most are useless, but they tend to cost $20 US dollars per 10,000 visitors. Now I’m going to show you the true power of what is a Keyword research for! Now that I’ve learned what I need to do, and to give others the same opportunity I decided to start this website. The name I researched and chose to use has an average monthly search result of 269410 people entering my name into the search box.

Now that I’ve learned what I need to do, and to give others the same opportunity I decided to start this website. The name I researched and chose to use has an average monthly search result of 269410 people entering my name into the search box.

That would mean for me to have the same results for my business TD Remodeling to have the same entries for my domain name here, I would need to pay $538.82 US dollars to have the same traffic per month. The other thing to mention is before you end up with your pages/posts all starting to make the first page, your website domain name will move into the first page within the year.

What do you say we go to Step #10 and put this all together!

This is excellent. I am bookmarking your site so I can come back when I am struggling with something. I love your graphics. Do you create them yourself? I would love to be able to do that. do you think you could do a post on that some time because I am sure there are a lot of people who would like to be able to do it. Keywords are a bit of struggle for me. I think about what words I would use to search for what I am selling but when I put it into Jaaxy I find the results are not very good. Do you think I will ever master it?

Glad you liked it and this is only the beginning, and to answer your questions. I do create some of my graphics or manipulate existing photographs. To know which programs and how I do it you can go to my test site which was created from one of my hobbies.

If you type in “Say It With Photographs” it will show up on the first page. From there you can sign up for the newsletter which will give you access to the 5 sister sites. There is one of them that talks all about software and how to edit photos, images, etc.

When your using Jaaxy on the far right-hand column there are other keyword phrase choices you can also look at that may give you better choices.

One of the biggest things to figure out with keywords are the order in which most people place them in and whether they are using singular or plural tense for what they want. The other thing is using the aproprite buzz words.

This is a huge amount of information. I didn’t realize the importance of keyword searches. I like that you figured it out are are now helping others. I will definitely be coming back to your page over and over again. I to have mad mistakes. I like how thorough you explained everything. For me, I have decided on using Jaaxy for all my keyword research now.

Jaaxy allows me to look up any keyword or combination keywords as a phrase and shows me all the related data. Jaaxy will display how many monthly visitors use the keyword or phrase and what the competition is with them.

I’ve tried some of the others but found them incomplete or not very accurate where Jaaxy has been all round great for how well it works.

Yes, keywords in the articles are still important. Maybe they are not as important as they used to be, but still we should create our articles around the given keywords.

What I do is I use my main keyword in the title of the article, in the URL and in the first 100 words of the article. After that I use different secondary keywords (LSI keywords).

And yes, Long Tail Keywords are great. This is how we mostly get traffic to our blogs, through long tail keywords. They are less competitive and bring more targeted traffic to our blogs.

Starting an online business can be so intimidating. There’s so much competition. I always felt it was out of my grasp. You have explained a lot of steps in such a simple manner that even I could understand it. I would still like to know more about keywords and SEO. What is it an SEO can offer? Where would I find an SEO? It seems to be an important part of this so I’d really like to understand it better

Hi Jennifer and SEO is a critical part of ranking your website on the Internet. There are those that pay to advertise for exposure and ranking and then there are others that will rank by keywords for SEO to get exposure. Both methods work, but obviously, one approach is very costly while the other is much cheaper.

I’ll be doing more posts and getting into the concepts of proper SEO. The indepth segments of SEO are beyond this website for most visitors wanting to now about website builders and how to get started and well on their way. I will be covering the better parts of SEO just because having a website without any SEO considerations will only leave you dead in the water and the whole purpose of having a site is to be seen.

With Wealthy Affiliate you learn everything from the beginning to the end to be successful with all the requirements of having an online presence.

Hi Travis
I have learned so much from your article here.I have been struggling with trying to get my pages well ranked on Google.

It finally clucked in me my mistake, as you mentioned you Don’t just use broad and common used Keywords, you use specific and long tail keywords.

The reason for this, is that I am gathering the competition is quite high.Is this correct?

I am sorry for the initial mistake that you made earlier on when building your site, but I too have learned from it and know the potential pitfalls. I am eager to learn of the Keyword Research tool, you talked about and will be following you through on your next lesson.

That is one of the biggest considerations we need to do is take the time to figure out where we may have gone wrong so we can fix the problem. The Internet is evolving, and changes are being made so if we are not on top of what the changes are and keeping up with making the right changes, we get left behind.

Having keyword tools to show us where and what people are looking for and how they are looking will help keep us ahead of the game and give us the opportunities we need to be successful. Without knowing which keywords or where people are focusing their searches to we are operating blindly. No a place we can afford to be if we want to be useful.

Excellent information you have here. I never really understood the importance of keyword research. But you have made me realize that I need to start and fast.

Why does it seem like it’s almost impossible to find a good domain name ending in .com?

I’m researching some now and it just seems like every thing that sounds reasonable is already taken.

    Travis

    August 26, 2016 at 10:35 am

When you consider how many people are all on the Internet these days, the .com names will continue to get harder to get your hands on. That’s one of the reasons for all the different extensions for domain names as well. They have been setting up extensions by country and some professions to keep up with the demand.

If you search hard enough on keyword phrases, you will still find available .com names out there. I find it best to find them by using Jaaxy as this keyword tool tells me all that domain names are still available from any search I do for my keywords.

I like to use jaaxy for my keyword research, plus they offer me the ability to keep a list of all they keywords I find and too sort them all out into list whenever I need them.

Honestly though I often forget about keywords when I’m writing content because I’m just so focused on making the content good and informative. Is it possible to get ranked high without keywords?

    Travis

    November 9, 2016 at 1:55 pm

You will get ranked without looking for specific keywords as the content you create will be made up of keywords and phrases when you to create any pages/posts for your site. The advantage of having the keyword tool is to be able to know which keywords you are competing for and what kind of competition you are actually up against when you use them.

Without a keyword tool you are creating pages/posts blindly not knowing who you may be targeting and how you may rank.

You will rank, but it will take longer and not sure just how much traffic will show up with the keywords or phrases Google and the other search engines will use from your articles.

You normally have the keywords or phrases you place in your content plus whatever the search engines extrapolate from your articles.

Hello Travis,
Thanks for the information. You are so right – it is very important when it comes to keyword research. You need it to make your online presence ‘felt’.
It is also important as you pointed out that knowing what is being ‘researched’ helps you, the website owner to be more able to provide the answers – of course with the help of the keyword research tool.
I am new to this online world and I so appreciate your tips.
Thanks so much and continued success to you.
