What Is Niche Marketing About?

When it comes to anyone looking to be an online Marketer you need to figure out just what your business niche will be and decide what you’ll base it on. Now depending on just how new you are to the online marketing scene, you may be asking yourself what is niche marketing about?

By taking a simple step by step approach, you’ll be able to figure out a profitable niche for any business you have in mind.

What is a Niche?

A niche is a section or particular area of a product, service or topic you’ll deal with in your business. To get started, we’ll need to pick a broad term from a general market from anything of interest.

As you brainstorm for general business topics, you’ll be able to come up with many different ideas. From all these thoughts that will come to mind, you will need to make a choice as to what you may use for a business niche.

You will start to notice after brainstorming ideas of general niche possibilities which ones seem to be more favorable. The thing to do at this point is to remember this is just some of the first stages to discovering your possible niche and now is not the time to settle yet.

One of the things you can do is isolate all the general topics that you have experience with, hold keen interest for and already love or know this has the potential for you to enjoy getting involved with on a daily basis.

You need to have the right mindset to keep creating content for your visitors. If you lose interest, then you’ll be guaranteed that your visitors will lose interest.

You will require some or all of these attributes for you to create a site and populate with the proper content that others will want to come back for more. Without having engaging content, you will not make the correct connection with your visitors for products and services you are offering that they are searching for when they leave your site prematurely.

The more content that you create for your site, the more traffic, the search engines will generate counting on you write good quality and unique articles.

Fine Tuning to a Specific Niche

For you to compete and earn income from maximum results, you need to take your niche topic from a broad area to a more specific one. One of the key advantages to this is people that are very specific in their searches are also closer to the purchasing phase than the usual tire kickers just browsing around.

fine tuning a nicheIf your topic for your niche was Renovations as this is what you are passionate about and have the experience to boot, then you could offer products or services that relate to this topic as your niche.

Even though as a keyword “Renovation” can be in high demand you are dealing with a niche that is far too broad not to mention the competition will squash you before you even start. You need to start reducing the size of your topic by being more specific.

You want to filter through your topic to acquire the best specific result for a keyword or phrase that is unique to your niche as much as possible.

We’ll take the broad keyword “Renovations” and get more specific with keyword phrases for your niche.

Home Renovations
Kitchen Renovations
Bathroom Renovations

As you can see, we are reducing the size of the Renovations niche to be more specific in nature for a possible smaller more refined niche.

These are terms that people enter into their browsers monthly which you could solve a need for a product or service they may require. When you address issues or have answers to what people are looking for, then you could have the solution they are seeking to find. Your knowledge from experience or learned as required combined with your marketing can make this a possibility.

Your expertise and site development will progress as you work on it over time and this will increase your traffic. Your continuing content and addressing the needs of your visitors will grow your business.

Unlimited Potential for any Niche

Each niche has the potential to work. You just need to have the knowledge or gain the knowledge to make it work. People purchase all types of products and services, and it is up to you when deciding upon a chosen niche which way you’ll see about marketing and build a business around it.

You’ll be able to check out the possible traffic for the niche you wish to choose. There are research tools that are available to show the monthly requests people make for any keyword or phrase they search in the different web browsers.

Top Methods for Identifying Specific Niches

There are many ways to check into which niches have the best potential for you. Depending on your experiences, background and what you’re into will determine what niche you would like to do.

I’ll go through three methods online marketers are using to find their niche and us a simple example that may not be your preference but just to get the point across.

1. Google Instant

Google is more than just a search engine that delivers us search results for keywords we use to find products/services we may be interested in possibly buying or wanting to know more.

Google has an option called Google Instant.

The way it works is every time you enter a keyword or phrase into the browser; Google Instant starts to produce relative extensions of other common search terms with your entry.

It starts off with showing your entry as you start the first few letters and Google shows full words. As your words are being typed out, Google keeps adjusting the words to follow along with your spelling giving you multiple choices until the word is completed. At that point, Google adds extra words to follow for more specific searches.

Google Instant

This serves for most, as a method for faster searches for those looking to find things on the Internet but for online marketers, this is a handy tool to show the top related search terms to your keyword or phrase being entered monthly from other people’s searches.

Each Google Instant result can be a potential niche.

2. Targeted Keyword Research

I use Jaaxy as my keyword research tool and for this example. To get started, all you need to do is type in any term that you want to see the results for.

keyword research for renovation

Once you type in your keyword in this example “renovation,” Jaaxy will display your keyword and other keyword phrases for your available results.

By clicking on one of the keywords results, you will have another list of more specific keyword phrases available to you.

keyword research specific results

The deeper you dig around into a niche, the more targeted your keyword phrase will become for visitors. Changing up words or making them singular or plural all make a difference to the total monthly searches.

keyword research more specific results

Take a look at the five entries listed below and see how each of these keyword phrases have thousands of people searching them on a monthly basis. All five of these phrases have thousands of unique searches every month dealing with either kitchen designs or kitchen renovations as a niche.

keyword research finalized results

The first three are all dealing with kitchen remodeling from old to new. With all those potential customers can you see how easy it would be to generate a website and write content on the subject.

Imagine, having one term as your business name and write pages/posts for your site using these terms for your content on the subject. That gives you the potential of having 22,845 potential customers looking at your products or services.

Does this sound like a potential business niche that somebody can cash in on?

This example was just one simple search that you can do with any product or service. Just how deep you want to dig for a niche is up to you. The potential earnings are going to be governed by the type of niche and articles you produce.

To get a better understanding of which search terms you would use, check out this post “What Is A Keyword Research?” that explains things better about keywords the competition you’ll deal with and how to chose the right ones.

3. Alphabet Soup Technique

This method is used as a way to acquire potential ideas for niche research employed in pages/posts for your sites topics.

All the main search engines are capable of doing this method by using a few windows, but for simplicity, I’ll show you with Jaaxy.

alphabet soup a

The technique of this method is to enter your keyword then add each letter of the alphabet one at a time from a-z. Some would consider this as a form of keyword brainstorming where each letter will create a list of possible keyword phrases.

All the results from these searches are not going to turn up useful keyword phrases, but you can pick out the ones that have potential.

alphabet soup z

The concept for this will give you the opportunity to leave no stone unturned sort of speak as you search for more keyword phrases to track and refine your ideas for your site.

By choosing the best keyword phrases, you can create a list that you’d want to have the best monthly searches with the lowest competition that relates best to your chosen niche.

Again for myself, I check all keywords and data with Jaaxy. The ones that pass and meet my criteria are then used in pages/post for my site. To finish the page/post off I’ll match related products/services with the keyword phrases from available affiliate products and services that are free to join like Amazon.

Now when people are looking for a product such as the ones you have written posts on, your content and affiliate link could be what your visitor is looking for which means you could make a sale.

Each niche has buyers looking for something, and you’ll know from your niche research approximately just how many that could be. So the more content you create, the more traffic you can receive and the more sales that can come your way.

Now that you’ve had the chance to know What Is Niche Marketing About let’s take a closer look at What Is Keyword Research?

Hi Travis,

thank you for this explanation about niche marketing. It is interesting to see how many niches are out there. And the more you think about it the more options you seem to get.

This alphabet soup echnique you talk about seems to be very powerful to find a lot of keywords. The last time I had an alphabet soup was when I was still a kid. I will give it another try after reading your post, haha. I didn’t know that it is so easy to find such a variety of keywords.

Great article

Finding keywords is not that hard Rene but what you want to do before using any keywords you find is check them out for competition. There are lots of keywords that would be nice to use, but the competition is so heavy that you’d be better to use other ones.

So brainstorming, using the alphabet soup technique and just plain looking up keywords through Google or any other method is just the first step. You always need to check each one out for competition before you use them if you want to rank well with SEO.

Great post outlining what a niche is and why you should be utilizing them to ensure your affiliate marketing/ blogging success.

I see you use Jaaxy for keyword research, I’m also a big Jaaxy user. The brainstorming feature is also great for coming up with niche ideas when you’re stumped.

I hear you on that one Nate, but the think I love most about using Jaaxy is checking out what the competition is with each of the keywords before I decide which ones to use. After all, you want the most traffic for searches and the least amount of competition to go up against when deciding on which keywords to be using.

If you use keywords without knowing the competition that is related to the terms, you may find your site sitting for a long time going nowhere fast. Like you I have Jaaxy to eliminate that problem with all the data the program receives and formats for you to make choosing keywords simple.

Great information here. I will admit I myself have been trying to make money online for some time now.

I love how you state find your niche and described how to narrow it down to be more specific. I think this will help me with my next website. Thank you and how does weight loss sound?

    July 30, 2016 at 10:54 am

I find anything to do with weight loss; dieting, supplements, healthy eating, exercising are all going to be an area where you’ll be able to pick some fantastic niches. The amount of people looking for answers and help with these areas is increasing daily. The Internet has a massive following, and it is growing at exponential rate.

I’m sure you and anyone else looking to get into the weight loss niche will earn an income and be able to help out tens of thousands of people with a reliable site that deals with the issues to help others in their weight loss struggles.

Hi Travis,
Great post! I love the imagery you used it really helps that you are showing us and not just telling us how to do Niche keyword research. Jaaxy seems like a great option too! I have one question for you…Do all your keywords rank well or is it hit and miss sometimes?

    September 12, 2016 at 11:03 am

I find when I’ve used keyword research for different types of websites you’ll get varying results. Topics or niches that do not seem to have much competition will rank super fast and the ones that have more competition with people all looking to rank with their businesses are harder to rank against. Even when you look at having the low hanging fruit that shows you their are not to many sites using the search terms it is still harder as the search engines see the much larger and older sites as a more authoritative site over a newer smaller one for content.

Hey there,
Just stopping by, and after looking through your website I had a few questions of my own regarding choices. What did you find were the most difficult parts of getting started? Did you find that you tried multiple site builders before finally settling on one that worked? What worked and what didn’t? Thanks in advance!

    January 11, 2017 at 12:25 pm

Hi, Gina and to answer your question about choices and the problems with getting started. When I first started, I needed to learn how to code in the beginning 12 years ago and find a good provider. Nowadays they have website builders to handle the coding. When I decided to get with the times and redo my site, here where some of the challenges I looked into:
Best price for hosting and website builder.
A website builder that had the least amount of limitations.
Most flexibility for designing a site.

What I discovered was, I did find all of this but also came to realize how important I needed to learn about the new methods of SEO and marketing. When I saw how totally out dated my methods where I found the best price and place to give me everything I needed was here at Wealthy Affiliate.

    Everything I need is here!

Wow Travis! This is one great site. I don’t have any improvement suggestions. You have covered everything that I have been taught and then some. Even guest writers. I’m sure this didn’t happen over night and you are constantly improving. Congratulations on a job well done. Your site is like a mini WA course with great photos and helpful suggestions for people who haven’t even started yet. Ads to click on and positive comments that encourage sign ups. I found your personal photos to be reassuring and friendly. It’s all there and I hope your traffic is good. You deserve it. Bob

    March 29, 2017 at 10:59 am

Thanks for dropping by Bob and appreciate the comment. Most people that go through websites usually do not leave comments, and even fewer give feedback on what they think of a site.

I except all comments as this site was created to help anyone looking to get started or gather more information about building an online presence. Having comments from others help visitors know what others think about the different aspects of this site and how it relates to them. When it comes to building a site its all about choosing a niche, web design, layout, types of images, content writing, how you set your content up to look, SEO, marketing and the list goes on.

You have a great day and good luck with your site!
