What Is A Website Builder?

what about starting an online business intro

What is a Website Builder, is a CMS system that stands for Content Management System. You will hear it being referred to as a site builder or online website builder as well as CMS. By using an easy to use interface, anyone can create an online presence to have a website that you can enter photos and content for pages/posts or even multimedia like videos and audio in your site.

The website builders of today are set up to keep the back end of the sites design and operation separate from the content placed on the site. This separation allows the user to change out templates for the layout of the website without affecting the content within the pages/posts of the site. Keeping these two functions separate from one another not only makes changing templates easier while still maintaining your content but makes indexing for the search engines better as well.

Website builders – online versus offline

what is a website builder advantagesThe two main types of website builders are known as an online and offline website builder. The online are a web-based system that you would use from one of the provider’s server such as Weebly, Jimbo, Wix, and Squarespace just to list four. You access them through your browser to create and build your site. The offline software packages such as Morbirise, Ezgenerator, and RapidWeaver to name three are for creating your website on your computer then uploading your web site to a server where it will be hosted. Once the site is set up, you can add and delete content as you see fit. To upload, you can use an FTP software package giving you direct access to the folders within your site.

So what are the Advantages

what is a website builder discussion

For Online:

  • No software needs to be loaded into your device.
  • No software means you require to do no updates.
  • No requirements for software purchases or upgrades.
  • No requirements for accessing FTP servers.
  • Capable of working on your site from anywhere.
  • Hosting package is offered by the same provider as the website builder.
  • Most offer some form of a free option package

Offline:

  • More flexibility for hosting packages.
  • More options with hosting servers due to FTP server access.
  • Less dependent on server providers.
  • Work on your website on or offline.
what is a website builder versus wordpressThe advantages of whether you use an online or offline version of a site builder will ultimately come back to your needs. Compared to when I first started you had to program everything using code to create your layout and content. With all the advances in technology. You can now do it much easier and quicker. Your learning curve has been significantly reduced, but not eliminated. Most people will find the best route to take is for the online website builders.
When you choose an online builder, you will also have the choice of if it’s free and how simple the software is for creating your site. Different providers offer software for their website builder that has easier or more complex features to master from one another. The more features, the bigger the learning curve but, the more dynamic the abilities to how your site can be set up.
From some of the ones I listed above, Squarespace is for more advanced users and offers more advanced features for web building. The Weebly and Jimdo packages are simpler and geared as one of the best providers for beginners.
The one I use makes up 25% of all the websites now presently on the Internet and has been used from beginners to the most advanced. This site builder builds your website back end in a matter of seconds once you’ve chosen your name and theme. The difference is in its features!

Typical Website Builder versus WordPress

A typical website builder – is a software package that has all your layouts set up as the template for the backend of the site. These templates save you from having to program as you can pick what is a website builder versusone and then mouse over the different elements that will allow you to edit them. For some when you click on them, they will give you options of inserting things such as links, images or perhaps text. Depending on what part of the site you are hovering over will depend on what you are capable of doing. What you can achieve, is limited to the features and functions of how the template for the software package from the server provider works.

The more flexibility you have for built-in features, the more you are faced with a learning curve. Depending on where you are hosting, the amount of help you can get makes a big difference to the learning curve. Most people can learn what it takes to create websites when there is help available even in situations of a steep learning curve.

With today’s website builders, the old days of programming are gone, and the learning curve has been minimized.

WordPress –  is an open source software package for website building that offers a lot more flexibility. WordPress has themes for you to pick out that make up your back end to form the structure and design for your website. From there you only add your content or extra plugins for more features and functions. The difference is you do have the option to incorporate some minor code to greatly enhance your site. This allows beginners to start with a website and keep it simple or become more advanced as time moves on to use the flexibility that WordPress allows.

Just as the typical website builders have some software packages that have a longer learning curve, WordPress also has a learning curve for using the extra features or the real power that WordPress has to offer. Again if you have a good hosting place you can get the help required to get through the learning curve to master the features and technique needed to have a website operate on this platform.

I believe WordPress offers the best of both worlds where you can easily create a website to get started and have the advanced features as you learn as you go to produce an excellent online presence.

Very interesting! I am searching right now ways to build my website. My sister paid a lot of money and still is every time she needs something done on her website and I don’t what to do that. I wonder how difficult is to build a website if you have never done it before? I am not a programmer and know nothing about codes. I would like to try and see if I can do it on my own before I decide to hire someone. Do you think a beginner like me can navigate easily through WordPress? Thank you!

Hi Lena and this system is set up to help anyone who wants to learn. The days of having to know code are gone. If you know how to use code you can still get into that aspect of working with websites but the majority of the people are all using website builders.

The easiest way to check out what it’s like to work with WordPress is to take the free package which will guide you through the WordPress website builder which only takes 30-60 seconds then follow the lessons in the free course to start entering content for your new website.

You’ll have full access for a week so you can ask and get all your questions answered to see just how everything operates.

Hi

This is a great post, I have recently started my own small business and I feel I really need a website to help my out with everything.

I have no real knowledge of things like this so a website builder is ideal, do I have to be very IT savy to use website builders?

The great thing about website builders Ben, is the companies that have created the software or in the case of using WordPress, you’ll find the process of having to know and do code has been eliminated. The nice part about WordPress is you can still get into coding if you like but it is not required.

WordPress just gives you a lot more options and flexibility that the other website builders at this time do not.

Hi Travis!

This is a refreshing twist on highlighting the benefits of WordPress. Using WordPress myself, I agree with your recommendation.

WordPress really makes a guru out of a newbie! LOL…

Thanks for alerting us about the many Content Management Systems out there! Online marketers need to have this knowledge.

Great user-friendly site! Keep it up…

Hi Ronald and glad you liked the site. I use to use other software programs for creating websites from having to code but with all the website builders available today you no longer have to code if you choose not to.

From seeing what was out there to choose from, WordPress looked like the best option. Once I knew which platform I was going to use the next step was a proper place to learn, host and stay on top of all the changes the Internet would go through.

This is where Wealthy Affiliate won hands down to be the best full package for the price compared to everything else I had come across. For anybody serious about having an online presence then this is well worth checking out.

Hi,

Thanks for your article. I never used to believe that creating a website could be so easy. I currently use wordpress for my own website and I really do feel the benefits. It’s so easy to navigate through wordpress and make changes to your content. I’m glad that I discovered it, and even more glad, now that I’ve read your article, to see that it’s one of the better website building softwares out there.

Thanks,

Sarraa

WordPress does offer some great opportunities when it comes to building websites and what you can do when working with its platform. The older systems I use to use took so much more work dealing with code and making major changes to look was not as simple as changing out a theme to give your website a whole new look.

I find WordPress is a lot simpler and faster to work with and you still get a lot of control to do what you want or need to do when creating your sites.

Interesting stuff. My partner and I are currently setting up a cleaning business and a website is one of our top priorities to start attracting customers.

I’ve played around with a couple of website builders like Wix and Weebly and out of the two, i prefer Wix.

I think it has some great ready to go templates and they make it easy to add images and text.

The problem is, I’ve been reading a lot of negative stuff about them like it’s hard for Wix sites to get found in Google, you can’t change your template, and you don’t really own the site.

This has me worried and I see many people recommending WordPress instead.

I understand there’s more of a learning curve involved but do you think we would be better off in the long-term learning WordPress rather than looking going for the easier option like Wix which seems to have some major flaws?

I’d be very interested in hearing your opinion.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Lee and my recommendation may seem a little bias to some, but I prefer to have as much flexibility as possible. The primary website builders like you mentioned Wix and Weebly are classified as two of the best for what they are. Friends of mine use one called Squarespace which is basically the same idea as the other two and is also rated as one of the best.

Even though you may find WordPress has more of a learning curve, I do not believe anyone should let that deter them as you can still set up a website in seconds with the website builder used to create them such as the one I use in Wealthy Affiliate. The best part is WordPress can be modified as you need to over time.

Website builders are a whole new breed of site creators where you can quickly modify change or alter your site back and forth without all the problems of the past with coding. If you do not like the theme then just make a few clicks, and your site has been transformed. In the past, you were required to rebuild the entire site. Not anymore.

I will be addressing a lot of the website builders on this site as time passes but ultimately I prefer a reliable WordPress website builder like the one I use in Wealthy Affiliate. I also use WA for all the extras you get that the other website builders all seem to fall short on and that the training and tools to help make your website an online success. It doesn’t matter how great your website is if you do not get the traffic required for conversion your site is dead in the water and possibly sinking.

I heard of the online website builders but not the offline ones. I still prefer WordPress over website builders since I am a Web Developer and can change the HTML, CSS and PHP on their to my liking. Most of the time, my changes would be minimal if I find the right theme, and there are so many out there.

The term website builder varies depending on who considers the meaning. Some consider as you mentioned the other providers have website builders as you get what the providers offer, and there are no alterations that you can do to the way the finished sites are other than the way they allow content to be entered.

WordPress allows you to make changes to your site templates if you know how to code. As you know as a web developer we use to have to set up and code everything to create websites, and there was no click a button or two and totally change out an entire theme as they have today.

For anyone who does not know how to code they can still have a website builder with WordPress as with Wealthy Affiliate and there are others that you can make a few clicks and have your site created by one of the themes, and now they can just add content. The part I like as you mentioned, unlike the other website builders that are restricted, with WordPress website Builders such as the one with Wealthy Affiliate you can modify and make changes with code if you want.

Most other providers with website builders do not allow this flexibility for their users.

Getting a website up and running can be time consuming. I have been very frustrated in the past and wasted a lot of time getting my sites running.

WordPress takes all the stress out of getting a website built an online. Also, I love the one click updates.

Thanks for the info!

Building sites have come a long way from having to purchase software than code to build and publish a site to simply using a website builder that does all the back end in seconds, so you no longer need to know any code. Now that it is so easy to create sites many other people now have the opportunity to build online businesses that they could never do in the past without putting a lot more effort and money.

Hi Debra and for anyone who has created sites in the past and to create them today with the website builders the providers supply on their platforms for people to use and build their online presence with certainly know the difference. Even if you or others have not done coding in the past today does offer great opportunities to everyone looking to create a site.

The other great thing is even with the website builders of today the different providers continue to improve upon their platforms to keep making them better. Wealthy Affiliate is one of the top leaders in offering more functions and features as they develop on their platform and deliver more every year to give its members more for the original money they pay for their membership as a premium member.

Like most things, it’s just a matter of having the right information so you can make an informed decision. Once you know the difference on topics or something you need to know about you can figure out which method or way you would like to proceed. Nice to know that you have found the answer you were looking for to make that decision easier.
