Does Squarespace meet the higher expectations of what people have come to expect with a website builder?  Yes and no as I’ll explain going over the details below.

Launched in 2004, Squarespace is a drag and drop website builder. They focus mainly on delivering a highly polished/finished rich in imagery for users to create their sites with this platform.

When you are looking to create a site that has visual impact, expensive and professional appeal, without the expense, then Squarespace offers you this ability.

You’ll have the capacity to create the look and feel of your site by the design oriented platform Squarespace have given you with the ability to make many design changes without having to code. People are choosing to have more graphics/imagery prefer Squarespace over most other website builders just for that reason alone.

Users of squarespaceSome examples Squarespace users have created.

Squarespace has over 1 million paying users. With this many paying customers this alone is a great testament to the website builder they’ve designed for their clients.

When compared to Wix and Weebly two other leading top end website builders. Wix has 1.77 million and Weebly does not disclose their paying subscriber’s numbers like Squarespace and Wix.

Weebly does disclose they helped people create over 30 million sites but with no public information, there is no way of knowing how many of the sites are from paying customers and how many are on the free plan.

1. SQUARESPACE REVIEW VIDEO

This is a video done by an actual Squarespace user.

2. Easy of Use?

You simply drag & drop content on your site.

There are plenty of videos that will guide you through just how easy their website builder really is for most building tools used.

In the past, you use to switch back and forth between editor and preview mode but with all the latest updates, this is no longer an issue making Squarespace even easier.

This update has the editing and preview view combined so what you see while editing is how it will look when you publish.

You do not need to deal with code as you can click in the area you want to edit and Squarespace will give you options for editing the particular spot your in. This way you can edit the style and look of your content directly in front of you.

3. Options for Template Design

Unlike some of the other website builders that have hundreds of templates to choose from, Squarespace has put great effort to maximize each and every template they do have to be their best.

Squarespace takes the approach of quality over quantity. Where most other website builders will crank out a high quantity of templates to choose from you, just end up with mediocre where Squarespace focuses on quality of a smaller group of templates to handle different design areas you’ll want websites for to look more professional.

Squarespace presently has just over 40 templates designed for various industries like a business portfolio, blogs, musicians, saw, restaurants, and weddings.

Squarespace offers single scrolling pages that you can use as cover pages to add sophistication to your site.

The cover page can be utilized as a stand-alone single page website, or Squarespace allows you to combine it with a template for a more advanced looking site. At present, they have designed 26 cover pages to choose from for your website.

4. Tutorials/Community Resources/Support

TutorialsCommunity ResourcesSupport
Instead of having to figure out everything for yourself, Squarespace offers an extensive library of video tutorials. These tutorials will give you the basic step by step methods of how to use their website builder and create the website you want.

squarespace workshopLink for Squarespace Workshop.

Squarespace has set up a knowledge base that is searchable to find answers to your questions. Depending on your preferred learning methods you can choose between short video tutorials, screenshots, and text.

Another excellent way to get questions answered is with the forum Squarespace has. The support staff or other members can answer your questions as users can share troubleshooting tips and experiences.

One of the things that have been brought up about getting answers to questions is the knowledge base and forum, is operate independently of one another. What happens is if a question you may find the answer to in the forum but not the knowledge base so when you want to go back if you forgot where the answer came from you could have trouble relocating it again.

In many cases, the answers can be in the system you just have the problem of checking each one to find what you are looking for as they are not crossed referenced. You can email support, and they’ll get back to you with an answer usually within the hour or get them through live chat.

To make things easier for you, Squarespace has a 24/7 support team to help by email or live chat.

If you’re residing in a different time zone from New York, which is where Squarespace is headquartered, their policy is to answer all emails in less than 1-hour regardless of time.

5. E-Commerce Capabilities

Squarespace has the ability for you to create an online store using a comprehensive set of e-commerce tools. Their options are more flexible than most other website builders when building a successful e-commerce site.

You can easily sell anything from digital to physical products. You’ll be able to customize emails, process orders, print off packing slips and take care of inventory from a single intuitive interface. Flexible options allow for quickly setting up multiple shipping methods, different coupon offers, and tax rules.

6. SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Squarespace like other website builders allows for HTML markup for search engine optimization for your site as a whole with titles, descriptions, and all individual pages/posts.

A sitemap is automatically created for Google Webmaster Tools that you can submit to Google. The sitemap is used to tell Google where to crawl your site and index. Not all website builders offer this feature.

Squarespace also allows you to customize the web page title/URL of your site. Other drag and drop website builders do not permit this change, so the title is the same as your web page address. Being able to customize your page address makes you more SEO friendly.

You can gain comprehensive statistics/data regarding your website. This includes real-time analytics dashboard to track hourly, daily, weekly and your monthly traffic. Squarespace’s analytics also gets into letting you know about mobile usage from visitors, referrals to your site, most popular pages, etc.

Google Analytics can also be added to track your site so you could utilize both for better comparisons.

7. Hosting

Hosting with Squarespace is part of the package with having a website with them.

Their package includes you not worrying about security issues from hackers, technical details as they take care of all the hosting requirements for you. You simply concentrate on building your site and marketing.

You have the ability to export your pages and blog into WordPress from Squarespace, which is something that not all other website builders will allow. This means all the work you put into your site is not being used against you to stay if you decide to leave. This shows good faith on their part that what they offer is worth sticking around.

8. Pricing

With Squarespace, they have no free package but offer a 14-day trial period where you can put them through the paces to see if they have what you want. This way you get to try them out with no risk to you.

There are 3 different packages:

1. Cover page is $5/month for a yearly plan and $7/month to month

2. Personal is $12/month for a yearly plan and $16/month to month

3. Business is $18/month for a yearly plan and $26/month to month

squarespace pricing

Squarespace offers packages for e-commerce online stores at $26 and $40 per month. You gain more advanced related tools for e-commerce and have all the transaction fees removed. The personal and business plans can have products sold on them but they are limited to transaction fees added, and you receive fewer features when building your site.

With a Cover Page plan, you receive only one page that you can enter content on and can not create a website requiring multiple pages.

The Personal and Business plan from the “Websites” category allows you to have cover pages and the extra pages to create a full functioning website.

squarespace site and cover

The cost of these plans for Squarespace is slightly higher than other website builders having similar capabilities. Knowing the difference in prices between the different website builders, you would be able to understand the price difference using the platforms for creating a site.

With the features and functions of Squarespace’s templates, you could expect to pay thousands to have web designers and developers to create the same end product for such a professional looking site.

Even with that said you would also have a monthly recurring hosting expense of $4-$6 as well just at the entry level. With all the extras that can be added, like security and other technical options, some providers will be considerably more expensive.

Squarespace frees you up from all of these other issues and allows you to spend your time where it really matters, building and marketing your website.

Where Squarespace offers no free package, you do get the opportunity to do the 14-day free trial. This eliminates any financial risk giving you the chance to see if this platform can work for you.

Squarespace offers 24/7 support for their website builder to ensure your transition to using their system runs as smoothly as possible. You have the opportunity to create a sleek looking professional website for a bargain price for what you get.

9. SQUARESPACE REVIEW – PROS AND CONS

ProsCons
1. Squarespace templates are clean, minimalistic with a sophisticated look. They catch the viewers attention from having designer templates that are stunning to look at from the start.
Compared to some other website builders, Squarespace offers professional clean lines that resemble a high-end designer built website; you’d expect to pay good money for to duplicate the quality and standard set forth.
A very popular trend is using cover pages either for a stand alone website that you scroll through or incorporated into a template. This feature allows for a very sophisticated design for websites that Squarespace has adapted without you having to code.

2. Squarespace has made all its templates responsive to be viewed across all devices to resize to your screen to optimize all content. With growing numbers of visitors using mobile devices, this feature is of particular importance to have people stay on your site without scaling problems to see your content. You’ll also have extensive styling options most other providers do not offer. Some of the other sites require you to get into coding to accomplish the same thing, and some have no options to accommodate for these features. Squarespace is a website builder that allows you to do some types of customization for your site design without the knowledge of coding.

3. An example would be, the ability to adjust, background images, image opacity, spacing/padding, fonts, colors, etc. on your Squarespace website.

4. A newer update has changed one of Squarespace cons to a pro, and that is no more switching between editing and preview mode. They have now designed it so, what you see is what you get from editing to final publishing.

Try Squarespace Free trial

1. When it comes to dragging, adding and dropping blocks in Squarespace, it is not as smooth a transition compared to some of the other website builders. (Note that blocks are basic components for website building like slideshows, text, and images).
People have found that moving a block from one location on your page to another can take a few tries when scrolling is required for the new block position.

2. You can create some great sites from changing settings in the style editor, but this can be overwhelming to some. You’ll want patience and an eye for detail when you get into designing your site in this manner. For most this will be a feature, you’ll probably skip on, but the function is there for those willing to use them. Either way, you can still have a stunning looking site with Squarespace.

10. IS SQUARESPACE RIGHT FOR YOU?

Regardless of which industry you are in, Squarespace can work for you.

People using Squarespace find it ideal for:
(link to access templates on  site)
bloggers
boutique businesses / online shops
designers, portfolios
musicians
photographers
restaurants
weddings / occasions

Squarespace has created a website builder that allows almost anyone including non-designers to have great looking sites that they can create.

The secret to Squarespace allowing a custom built site that you create come from their specially crafted templates that are easy for you to build and populate with your content.

Here are examples of some Squarespace customer’s sites showing how great their templates look once you have created a site with them.

11. Conclusion

Other than the few cons that people may find when using Squarespace, overall this website builder is a serious contender. Just as they have remedied the editing and preview issues that so many people found troublesome, Squarespace continues to tweak and improve their website builder to be even better.

With a comprehensive knowledge base, video tutorials, forum and 24/7 support line that they pride themselves on answering all questions within the hour, they are one of the best for customer support.

When you are looking at creating a professional site, Squarespace as a website builder is a very powerful platform to use. People looking to build sites with relations to blogs, boutique businesses/ online shops, design, personal websites, photography, portfolios or restaurants, Squarespace is one of the best to choose.

With their responsive templates, Squarespace allows designer-like website creations that look fantastic without having to pay out thousands to designers and developers to create a comparable site for you.

You get the flexibility for customizing your site from the styling options to give you more detail. You can build a site with just the regular templates that will look great, but these tools allow for more in-depth tweaking in over design to step up the appearance of your website even more.

To get the most from whether Squarespace is for you or not would be to check out their existing templates for design and appeal to see if they have the visual impact you may be looking for and search and review through their videos to see how their website builder operates. This simple procedure can literally save you countless hours to know if Squarespace is for you.

To become a member to try out the 14-day free trial requires no credit card so you’ll be able to test their website builder and make the best decision for you if Squarespace is truly for you or not.

I have friends that use Squarespace for their business and are totally pleased with everything they have to offer. I do not use them even though I recognize them to be one of the better choices out there, but for my needs I wanted, even more, flexibility, training, community and support than Squarespace has at this time.

I chose my website builder with a different provider that also address to even more important issues of why you have a site in the first place.

How to create the traffic for your site? After spending time creating the perfect site, how do you convert readers into paying customers? After all, is this not part of the reason for your online goals, to help others and make money, correct? Squarespace touches on some SEO tips about it in the knowledge base area but leaves you having to go or pay for the knowledge elsewhere.

That is why I chose to use WordPress from another provider that offers what comes after the first stage of having a website. When you require a business platform that will need a ton of content without restrictions on page limitations for driving traffic on a global usage, you need more.

WordPress gives you the option to create websites just as beautiful as Squarespace without the constraints. There are thousands of themes to start with, and now you get to build these sites through a website builder without having to code. You do still have the option to add coding if you wish, but it is not a requirement.

With WordPress powered by SitRubix, you get better perks for new business and webmasters.

Here are just some of the perks:

Daily backups, prompt technical support and optimum uptime from the hosting service provided.

Make domain name purchases with privacy protection and email accounts never dealing with upsells.

Regular website builders that provide hosting packages do not have the foundation and support you’ll receive from Wealthy Affiliate as a whole. You’ll find your site has the power of a global community to help build your site through feedback and comments not offered by other providers.

You can get a free package and get started with Wealthy Affiliate entrepreneurship program for training you to be successful online.

Once you use this website builder for WordPress by SiteRubix, you’ll quickly realize there are more considerations to building a website than just how it looks.
Want to make a successful site without chains holding you back? Just enter a domain name of your choosing below to get started and I’ll personally help you with the process of creating your very first website.

If you believe you need the ultimate website builder as I did then check out, my #1 recommended option, Wealthy Affiliate.

Square space is one of the better website builders that a lot of people will use just like Wix and Weebly, but all of these providers are mainly focused strickly on having a site created and nothing more.

For most people learning and wanting to get on the Internet are looking for a full package, and that is where they can check out Wealthy Affiliate. Wealthy Affiliate will take you from start to finish teaching you everything you need to know and not just the first stage of creating a website.

So it comes down to how much you know and how simple of a provider you want. Squarespace is great, when you already know all about marketing or you plan on learning it somewhere else and just want a site. Most people I know using SquareSpace pay monthly money for marketing to get traffic.

Great review! I’ve used Squarespace before and I can highly recommend it too. It is really easy to use and you can do a lot. You really did your research here! The review is super in-depth. I’m going to show this to friends looking for answers regarding squarspace. Thanks for your article.

Hi Jeremy and thanks for the comment, Squarespace is one of the better website builders out there for people just looking for a good dependable provider. They do not offer a free package like Wix and Weebly who happen to get better ratings, but ultimately Wealthy Affiliate has the best free package and upgraded package over all of them.

Hi Travis,

Thanks for this detailed review.

I have some questions.

One, I noticed that on their pricing of websites, there is a 2 percent or 3 percent Sales Transaction Fee depending on business or personal plan. It looks like you can sell products and services using their solution, however you then have to pay the associated sales transaction fee on top of whatever the Bank or Credit Card company charge. Have I understood this correctly?

Two, I noticed that they do offer emails. You have to purchase emails via a third party.

Three, a pricing question. Currently your review mentions that Business is $18 per month for a yearly plan and $26 per month to month does this mean that these prices need to be multiplied by 4 if you have say 4 domains that you want to use Squarespace? That is Business is $72 per month for a yearly plan (based on 4 domains) and $104 per month for a monthly plan (based on 4 domains)?

Kind Regards,
David

Hi, David and to answer your questions let’s take them in order as you asked them.

For the first answer, you did understand what I had mentioned the right way as they do take a transaction fee of your sales, and the financial institute will also take their percentage from products being sold.

Secondly there email system is set up through a third party that will also cost you some extra money on top of the monthly provider fees etc.

And Thirdly when you have four separate domains for doing business, the $18 is only good for one business unless you are mapping extra domain names to point to the primary domain name. For instance, I have tdremodeling.com as my main website. I have tdremodeling.ca pointing (also known as redirected) to tdremodeling.com, That will not cost extra.

Four sites will cost the $72/month for the yearly plan.

One more reason I recommend Wealthy Affiliate which works out cheaper than most other sites by the time you add up all the costs. I pay a flat fee of $29/month on a yearly plan and have a dozen websites. With SquarSpace that would cost me $216/month for the yearly plans. Wealthy Affiliate also offers far more than just a website builder and hosting package as a provider.

Hey Travis,

You are right. More often than not, people who are like looking to build websites want to know how to develop it as well and possibly make money out of it.

Squarespace does offer a great website builder but doesn’t show people how to earn from it. Wealthy Affiliate seems to be the package to go for since it comes full packed.

I’d also recommend that people go for it. I’ve tried it and the training works like magic!

As I have mentioned I do know some that use Squarespace, and they are good, but they are just a basic provider so you need to know what to do already for SEO and marketing or you’ll need to learn it from another source.

Wealthy Affiliate is the full package that can handle everything so you can save time and money by dealing with them and all the extra help from the community.

The best I have found in over the last decade since I’ve been online.

Hi Travis,

The option of choosing squarespace as a source for building and also hosting websites is quite valid.

Admittedly I am not into some of the specific aspects, being a member of WA, that would be involved with actually building such a sophisticated website using the tools provide at squarespace.

Just going through the particulars that you provided it seems as if having only 40 themes available to choose from for a website – especially considering the number of industries that squarespace aims to serve is quite a small total.

Also again mentioning WA and the fact that members there at the premium level are able to use WordPress to select the vast choice availability of themes and then have a site built; I wonder how the price for doing all of this would compare to squarespaces’ membership costs?

Premium membership at WA also includes so many other features at the price advertised, (and much less if one chooses the Yearly option as I have done) besides just website building tools plus hosting.

Still if one were not a member of WA and needed to create a website and have it hosted for his/her business, Squarespace would be a viable option to choose from.

Thank you for the detailed presentation, Travis!

The thing is Jeff; most people are not familiar with Wealthy Affiliate as they tend to only look for companies that are basic providers. With that being the case the majority of people pay more money following the masses that pay for the providers that offer a website builder and hosting.

At Wealthy Affiliate you get the website builder, hosting with training for using the platform just like most other providers. With Wealthy Affiliate, you also get a full education on how to build and create your site for earning an income from all the extra training that the other providers do not offer. WA also gives you continues training to make sure you stay up to date.

Also as you know, most people at WA also have more than one website, and if Squarespace is your provider, you must pay for each site separately which will cost you much more than being with Wealthy Affiliate as a premium member.

Hey friend,

Thanks a lot for sharing this valuable information with me. I think square-space is indeed one of the to and best website builders out there. I especially like them for their focus on quality not on quantity.

Like you said, most website builders focus on more and quantity template and that sometime makes it difficult for you to choose which one is the best, especially if you’re a newbie. So I like square-space for their ability to provide you with quality template not quantity.

I also like that fact that they have video tutorials that guide you whenever you need help. Their monthly payment packages is also very cool.

I will surely try their building platform to see for myself how it works.
